February Meeting Recap

IMG_5945.JPG

On the super cold February 21st evening, we had a great turn-out to share our love of all things creative and made of textiles! Many of our members were in Nashville at QuiltCon including two that were award winners, Sam Hunter took third place in the Handwork category for “Why I’m a Feminist” and Christine Yi, won third among Small Quilts for her “You Are Here.” Matthew Stovall is on-site taking pictures and posting the PMQG Instagram page.

Guild President Erin welcomed 17 new members and celebrated February birthdays in addition to sharing exciting upcoming programming news.

The evening’s speaker, and one of the PMQG’s original members, Susan Beal is offering a Log Cabin Block Party Workshop ($75) on April 27 at Mill End, Beaverton. This workshop goes on sale February 25th at 6pm.

Sheila Sinclair Snyder’s Barn Quilt workshop had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The new date is May 4 and there are 4 spots ($100) available.

PMQG will be hosting Christina Cameli for a Wedge Quilt Workshop ($75) on April 6 from 10:00 - 4:00 at Kenton Historic Firehouse.  Workshop goes on sale 2/28 at 6:00 pm. Scholarship is available, apply at the class link above.

The April meeting is being pushed back a week to April 25 because a religious holiday conflicts with our original date.

The prolific author of 9 books, Susan Beal took us on a lovely journey down the path of her crafty evolution from making clothing and jewelry for Portland shops to expert Log Cabin designer and artist. Members were able to comb through 22 years of her quilting journals containing drawings, instructions, and fabric swatches during the break. She provided tips on getting quilting labels made and invited everyone to join her at a Book Signing Party at Portland Craft bar on March 9, Saturday. Embroidery, books, and refreshments!

Check out these gorgeous quilts Susan shared:

PMQG/MQG

We finally have resolution on the MQG membership issue, thanks to results from a member survey, the hard conversations had by the volunteer task force, and board member Sara Flynn’s inquiry to the MQG about split membership fees. Our members were split virtually in half on the survey question of potentially leaving the MQG. Fortunately, a solution that serves both audiences was crafted.

PMQG will have two levels of memberships offered. The first is a local membership at a cost of $45.

The benefits of a local membership include:

  • Monthly Meetings

  • Sew Days

  • Charity Sew Days

  • Hand Sew Happy Hour

  • Special Events

  • Retreats

  • Workshops

  • BOM

  • Guild Level Voting

The second level of membership is a Local + National membership. For 2019 this requires an additional $10 fee. For members who this is a financial hardship, please email the guild and we can waive this fee for 2019 only.

The benefits of a Local + National Membership include the above benefits as well as:

  • Access to the MQG Online Community

  • Access to MQG Monthly Webinar Series

  • Access to free monthly quilt patterns and Block of the Month Series

  • Able to vote in MQG Board Elections

  • Opportunity to participate in inter-guild swaps and challenges

  • Discounts on conferences and events

  • Priority and early-bird registration on conference and event admissions

  • Discounts and special offers with MQG sponsors and affiliated companies

  • Pin and Blog Button

The board will make the effort to hear from every member what their preference is. If you’d like to have the Local + National membership, please notify us by either purchasing the add on fee in our web shop or emailing us for the fee waiver.

Anyone who wants a Local only Membership, should complete the form here. We need our members to notify us their preference by March 20th so we can pay the appropriate dues to the MQG for 2019.

We anticipate that PMQG dues will change for 2020, depending on the numbers of members who opt for each level of membership. This decision will be made in late Fall/Early Winter.

PMQG Anncoucements

Erin shared reminders about the many projects PMQG sponsors that you can participate in and outlined the still-open volunteer 2019 roles.

The next Open Sew Day is at Mill End Beaverton on March 2. The guild can hang quilts at Mill End from March 1 – May 1, participants are first come, first serve. If you’d like to submit your quilt, please email an image to the guild!

Mary Ann Morsette provided additional details about the Spring Retreat, which sold out faster than any to date. There is one open slot open and Mary Ann encouraged people to get on the waiting list if they are still interested.

Mary Ann also announced plans for a Fall Retreat at Menucha in Corbett, OR from October 25-27. The price will be under $200 and only two nights. The venue is more rustic, has one large sewing room, and good food. Registrations will be open for two days on June 21st, first to members who did not attend the Spring Retreat before opening to all on June 23rd .

Entrants for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show challenge Bountiful Rainbows are in the process of being juried. Participants will be notified by February 24th . We still need volunteers to staff the exhibit. Shifts will be around 90 minutes. If you are planning to attend or already have a place to stay, stay tuned for the signups!

The February Block of the Month has been posted to our website, the Smoosh Block. Please visit our BOM page to download your pattern!

The Fat Quarter Lottery of reds had lots of participants with Jessica and Deb walking away with some nifty new fabric to work with.

Our raffle prizes for the meeting were donated by June Tailor, Inc, Lark Cottons, Violet Craft, Tuva Publishing and Benartex Fabrics. Susan Beal donated three prize packs for a total of 6 prizes for the giveaway which also included notebooks from Vintage Fabric Studio! Our winners were Toni, Susan, Donna, Heather, Becky, Angel, and Andrea.

Everyone stayed a few extra minutes for a great Show and Tell. Check out the gorgeous works presented here:

January 2019 guild meeting recap

2019 President Erin Case welcomed new and old members to the January meeting.  A lovely spread of member potluck was shared, along with chatter and new friends made at the round tables around the room.  We acknowledged 12 members who were able to join through scholarships and the January member birthdays.

sunrise.png

Erin shared the board’s goals for 2019: Community and Education. Some of our ideas about Community include celebrating our 10th year, our members and hopes to diversify our membership and work together on charity work. We’d like to work together on solving our challenges with the MQG rate increase and are exploring cost-conscious PMQG SWAG.  In thinking about Education, we want to revel in our many talented members, bring national speakers to our meetings, have fun with Block of the month, create opportunities for more people to participate through lotteries and scholarships.  Erin and board Veep Sara Flynn  announced the idea of starting a YouTube channel for BOM and announcements. Check out a preview of tutorials to come! https://app.biteable.com/watch/digital-sunrise-alternative-options-2140305/

PMQG members have several shows of Word Quilts showing.  The first exhibit is Outspoken:  Modern Quilts at PSU.  This show runs from January 14 - March 15.  On January 29th there is a Lecture featuring member Sam Hunter about “A Brief History of Word Quilts” from 5:30 - 6:30 at Lincoln Recital Hall.  Next, more PMQG Word Quilts are featured at the Lake Oswego Library to celebrate the Lake Oswego Reads program. This exhibit continues until the end of February.  Finally, PMQG member AnnMarie Cowley is showing Day of the Dead Quilts at Lake Oswego Library. These quilts were made to celebrate her daughter, born on the Day of the Dead.

PSU show.png

A general request was made for volunteers as there are some board and committee positions still wanting for leadership.  Sew Day, in particular, is in urgent need of 4-6 volunteers.  It’s a great way to meet people, learn new techniques, and try volunteering on for size.

Jennie McKee  gave us an overview about the UFO Club and Anne Matlak  explained how books can be borrowed from the Guild library. Michelle Freedman  garnered over 50 participants in her low volume fat quarter lottery and the two lucky winners of 25+ fat quarters each were Mona Wu and Patty Nisbett. Sara said next month the lottery (or Blottery) would be a Block Lottery.  If you’re interested in participating, make an extra January Block of the Month, the Digital Sunrise.  Blocks will be collected and grouped together with winners will be chosen via raffle from the participants at the February meeting.

Share your quilts at the clark County show!.png

Erin announced several calls for participation at regional quilt shows.  The  Clark County Quilters have invited PMQG to have a special exhibit.  If you’ve ever been interested in showing your quilts, this is a great first chance!  The first 10-15 quilts submitted will be accepted into the exhibit. To submit your quilt, email the guild with a photo!   The Willamette Valley show is happening in Albany February 1 and 2nd.

Our spring retreat is coming up, April 11 - 14 at Camp Tilikum in Newberg, OR.  Registration for this year’s retreat will post on the PMQG website at 10am on February 2.  The cost is $275  There are sleeping accommodations for 32 and additional volunteers are needed. This year it will be organized by the two original organizers, Mary Ann Morsette and Kim Lumapas. A fall retreat location is being explored, so stay tuned!

OPEN CALL FOR RAINBOWS!.png

Kimberly also requested volunteers to staff the meet and great PMQG table at the show in Sisters and shared speaker information for February and March. We’re excited to host a barn quilt painting workshop with Sheila Sinclair Snyder on February 9.  One spot is still available.

MJ Kinman will be teaching a Gem Workshop on Monday, March 18.  Spots for this workshop will be going on sale on February 9th, stay tuned for the announcement of the time!

Treasurer Judy Livingston gave us an overview of the Guild’s financials for 2018 (positive balance of $1,500) and our budget for 2019.  The board has allocated this money to  increase the opportunity for scholarships this year, as well as our Charity quilting.  Judy indicated that we are coming into the year with a hold-over balance or reserve from several years.

SPECIAL TASK FORCE.png

Erin kicked off a spirited discussion about the increase in MQG membership this year, the benefit of being members, and asked the group to contribute ideas of ways the MQG could benefit our Guild more directly. A good cross section of thoughts were shared with many members strongly expressing their desire to stay in or out.  It was agreed that a member survey would help us come to consensus and many felt a vote should be held before our payment is due in March. Susan Beal offered to put together a task force to identify specific requests for MQG to bring forward before the next meeting.

Three of our members will represent the huge talent Portland has in this year’s Quilt Con: Sam Hunter, Karen Lee  and Rachel Cook. Erin requested they share images and details about their work so the Guild can promote them through social media.

DOOR PRIZES!.png

As the evening came to an end, the winners of the January raffles were announced.  Ann Jenkins won a Fancy Forest quilt pattern donated by Elizabeth Hartman and fat quarters.  Maryann Todd-Thompson won 2 Charm square packs donated by Robert Kaufman and The Applique Book. And Chelsea was ecstatic to win the English paper piecing book donated by Tuva Publishing and Charm pack from Benartex Fabrics.

Check out the slideshow of quilts we got to see at the meeting posted below!

September Meeting Recap

Greetings Members!  Have you felt the change in the weather lately?  There’s (finally) a bit of a chill in the air, leaves are hinting at the coming change in color and Pumpkin Spice is everywhere!

On September 20th, the Portland Modern Quilt Guild met for its ninth meeting of the year.  Below is a recap of all the announcements and discussions that happened during the meeting.

Programs and Workshops

Anna Maria Horner will be our guest speaker for our November 15th meeting and teaching the Folk Flower Workshop on Friday the 16th and Inspiration by Hand workshop on the 17th.  Both of these classes are currently sold out, if you’re interested, please take a moment to sign up on our waitlist on the PMQG page linked above.

Denyse Schmidt will be our guest speaker on December 6th (please note that this meeting is on the first Thursday rather than the third of the month due to meeting hall availability).  On Friday December 7th Denyse will be teaching her Free Wheeling Single Girl Workshop. On Saturday, December 8th, she will be teaching her Woven workshop. Like Anna Maria Horner’s workshops, these workshops are currently sold out and waitlists are available on the PMQG page linked above.

A note about the waitlists:  we’ve already had a lot of movement on these workshops, so if you’re interested, please be sure to sign up so you can have a chance to get into the workshops!

Screen Shot 2018-09-09 at 11.30.40 AM.png

The location of Anna Maria Horner’s workshops and Denyse Schmidt workshops has also changed because of feedback from our Chawne Kimber workshops.  The new location for these workshops is the Kenton Historic Firehouse.

PMQG Showcase

Our October 18th meeting will be our Annual PMQG Showcase.  This is your opportunity to show your fellow guild members your work while enjoying some delicious food and drink!  In order to have a successful showcase, we need you to submit your quilts to show! Visit our website to submit your quilt, the deadline has been extended to September 28th!  Members will be notified if their quilts were accepted into the showcase by October 4th, and members need to turn in their quilts by October 11th. The Showcase meeting is open to PMQG members only, and will require an RSVP, we’ll be sending an Evite to members soon!  We’re still looking for volunteers to help with setup, please fill out the volunteer form on the Showcase page.

A special note to members--If you made a Kaleidoscope Mini quilt, we’ll be displaying them during the Showcase.  Be sure to submit yours to a board member by October 11th!

PMQG Town Hall

2019 Board Needs

We are looking to fill our leadership roles, including board positions and volunteer coordinators.  The more, the better to equally distribute the work.  As our volunteers for the board come together, the current board will work with you to help you find a match for your background and passions.  Our website has a list of how we have worked well in the past, distributing some of the work required to keep the guild functioning, but also ensuring our volunteers have the opportunities to showcase their skillsets and learn new ones.  We are still in need for more members to step up and join the 2019 board.

The term for the 2019 Board runs from January 2019-December 2019. New board members will have an orientation to their elected position from 2018 Board Members in December. 2018 Board Members will be available to be a resource for 2019 Board Members throughout the year.

We also have some volunteer opportunities open that won’t require as much time as being on the board will.  New members--this is a great way to get involved with PMQG! The following positions have no volunteers for 2019:

  • MQG Liaison (New)

  • Quilt Exhibits - Sisters Outdoor Show, Others

  • Guild Quilt Showcase & Catering

  • UFO Club

  • New Members and Guests Welcome Program/Packets

  • Small Quilt Groups

  • Open Sew Day

Please be sure to email the guild if you’re interested in serving in any of these positions.  Thank you to all of our members who have signed up to be a volunteer for 2019!

Bylaw Amendments

Two bylaw amendments were proposed and approved by the membership to go on the October Ballot.  They were:

Bylaw amendment to Article 8.2.

Current: The President and Treasurer shall be authorized to sign checks for PMQG.

Proposed: The President and Treasurer shall be authorized to sign checks for PMQG. An additional signer will be appointed by a majority of the Board.

Bylaw addition of a Zero Tolerance Policy: Portland Modern Quilt Guild will not tolerate any forms or perceptions of violence, intimidation, fraud, sexual harassment, gender, racial or age discrimination.  Reports of any such unacceptable behavior will be investigated and (if necessary) met with consequences which may include permanent expulsion from the Portland Modern Quilt Guild and involvement of law enforcement officials as deemed appropriate.

A note about our October ballot vote: In preparation for our upcoming Annual Meeting in November, we’ll be sending out a ballot to all of our paid members to vote on the 2019 Board as well as these two Bylaw Amendments. Results will be announced at our November meeting.

Hearing from Members

We addressed some of the questions we received from members.  The first topic was the issue of the growth of the guild. During our town hall, members expressed the interest in diversifying the membership, creating a junior PMQG group as well as expressing concern at the rate of growth, and the possibility of having to find a new site to meet at.

There were also concerns about the workshop sizes that have been offered.  As much as we’d love to offer a workshop to 100 people, workshop sizes are currently set by the instructors we invite.  It was discussed to change the way that workshops are sold by changing from the current first-come-first-served system to a lottery system.  This will be decided upon the 2019 board, as all of the 2018 workshop spaces are have been sold.

The size of the raffle prizes also came up and Judy, our VP of Membership and Procurement spoke on how she hasn’t heard much back from many of the companies she’s contacted.  Judy does take the time to ensure that all of the raffle prizes are at the retail value of $50, so we do give about $150 worth of raffle prizes at each meeting. We also spoke about how there wasn’t a sewing machine to give away for the Retreat raffle prize.  The board decided that because only a limited number of members can attend the retreat, it would be more fair to offer such a large prize at a general guild meeting rather than the retreat.

We also shared an update on the announced Modern Quilt Guild dues increase for guilds of our size (251+ members) and our proposed response. Programs Coordinator Susan Beal read a draft of a letter based on several discussions of the 2018 PMQG board, requesting the opportunity to negotiate a more reasonable increase. We then asked for feedback and input, and many PMQG members shared their thoughts and ideas.

In order to cover the proposed increase without dropping any of our current programming, we’d have to increase individual member dues by $5 to $45 for the year, and maintain our membership at 300 members. It was suggested during the town hall that in order to decrease hardship to members, PMQG should offer membership scholarships each year.

We then had an extended break where members were invited to share their thoughts about the guild and issues raised during the evening using Post-Its under 11 prompt signs.  All of your responses have been recorded which will be an excellent resource for this and next year’s board. Thank you for your participation and constructive comments!  If you have anything to add, please be sure to send us an email!

August Meeting Recap

Thanks everyone for braving the heatwave to attend our PMQG meeting and a big heartfelt congratulations to our President, Kimberly Buckley, who was off “getting eloped!” Mazeltov!

Erin Case, our guild VP for Technology and Social Media, stepped in to run the meeting. She announced that we are currently at 321 members and are the largest chapter of the MQG in the world! While that is exciting it also means we might need to find a bigger space to meet. Please let us know if you have ideas!

We welcomed our new members and invited those who are PMQG curious to become members. We have half-year memberships for individuals, businesses and sponsors available now. Check out the New Member section of our website to learn more about our guild and the MQG.

Our theme PMQG Special Exhibit for 2019 Sister's Outdoor Quilt Show is 'Rainbows.' Erin presented Color Wheel Quilts which explored inspiration for traditional and non-traditional versions. View all the Rainbow Quilt Challenge presentations and learn more about this special exhibit here.

The PMQG Charity Program was productive in July, delivering 55 quilts to our designated charities. We always have Wonky Star block kits and quilts to quilt and bind. Join us on August 24 at Modern Domestic for our next Charity Sew Day. All members are welcome, and all you need to bring is yourself!

Susan with Quinn from Raphael House and Allison from Butterfly Boxes

Susan with Quinn from Raphael House and Allison from Butterfly Boxes

Susan Beal, our guild Programs Coordinator, shared the exciting announcement that our first ever PMQG Charity De-Stash Sale raised $4,216 - half from sales and donations and half from a generous donor match! We applauded all volunteers, those who donated to the sale, and those who shopped for their efforts in making this event a huge success! We presented 'giant checks' for $2,108 to each of our recipients, Quinn Wilson from Raphael House, and PMQG member Allison Enrique from Butterfly Boxes. They each gave a presentation about their organizations and shared how these donations will benefit their programs and community. At the end of the meeting Susan announced that a member had recieved a corporate match, making our grand total $6,000! Does your company have a corporate match program? We are happy to keep this total growing!

We have a robust workshop program planned through the end of the year. Indigo Dying with Anna Joyce in August is currently sold out (waitlist is available). There are a few spots left in Christina Cameli's Free Motion Quilting: Textures and Grids class on September 8. Waitlists are available for both of the Anna Maria Horner workshops in November and we broke our guild shopping record for Denyse Schmidt's workshops: Free Wheeling Single Girl workshop sold out in two minutes (there is a waitlist available) and there are a few spots available in her Woven workshop.

Our guest speaker this month was the delightful and talented PDX artist Anna Joyce. She shared her creative journey and technique exploration that led her to her success as an artist, printmaker, author, and dyer. She presented slides of her work and shared tips and techniques for painting and dying fabric as well as growing an independent creative business. Here are Anna’s resources that she shared with us:

Products for painting and dying:

Jacquard Dye Na Flow
Jacquard Textile Paint
StayzOn all surface ink pads
Martha Steward All Surface Acrylic Paint

Fiber Reactive Dyes

Darma Trading
Jacquard Products
Artist & Craftsman Supply in Portland, OR.

At the break, Anna had lovely dyed garments available for sale as well as her Indigo Dye Kits and book, Stamp Stencil Paint. If you would like to purchase a signed copy of her book please email the guild. We have several copies for sale. Her newest book, Hand Dyed, A Modern Guide to Dying, will be out next March.

birdie-quilt-by-sam-hunters-quilt-group_43398671224_o.jpg

PMQG member Sam Hunter shared the Birdie Quilt that her mini group made that they will be raffling in November. Donations of women's underwear sizes XL - 4X and children's underwear sizes 6-12 will be the currency for raffle tickets. Their goal is to collect at least 700 pair which will be donated to the Raphael House.

Kits to participate in making our PMQG Quilt Con Charity Quilt designed by Linda Nussbaum are available! Blocks are due back at our September meeting or October Sew Day.

The Allison Glass Kaleidoscope Mini Quilt Challenge is well underway! Check out #pmqgminiquiltchallenge2018 for sneak peeks at what our members are making. We are collecting any scraps and unused fat quarters to give to our members on the waitlist. We will have these at our next sew day.

Our give-away winners this month were members Kory Keller, Marsha Mersky, and Terri Torke. Thank you to our generous sponsors and donors for your donations. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to get the first look at our awesome give-aways prior to our monthly meetings.

We tried a new way to sign up for Show and Tell this month in an effort to streamline the process and allow folks to sit and enjoy the show instead of standing off to the side in a line. What did you think? It appeared to run smooth and work like a charm square (quilt pun alert!) For those of you who weren't there, sign-ups are now paper-less and will be on our website and available the night of the meeting.

Here is the fabulous work that our guild members presented:

Michelle Freedman presented the Posh Block, the next in the #bespokeBOM series. This block is 24" square and was inspired by the Burberry Plaid. Free instructions include techniques for adding sashing to the block or slicing and inserting a stripe. Share your blocks on social media #pmqg2018BOM

Submissions are open for our second annual PMQG Showcase event this October. Submissions are open until September 20. Due to the size of the venue this will be a members only meeting. We are currently need of someone to donate/coordinate food for this event.

Our next guild meeting is September 20. We will focus on generating ideas for how to make our 10th year super special. Start thinking about ideas for programs, venues, changes and improvements, and if you want to step in to one of the volunteer leadership roles. We are looking forward to this fun, interactive meeting.

July Meeting Recap

On July 19th, we met for our seventh guild meeting of the year, and a great time was had by all.

Kimberly started out the meeting by opening with a video made from PMQG Words, Unbound quilts from Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.

Next, we welcomed any visitors, presented any new members present with a small gift, and wished any members with birthdays in July a Happy Birthday.

Then Kimberly presented some idea generators for our 2019 Sisters Exhibit Challenge:  Rainbows. These included some rainbow quilts she has made in the past like a rainbow jelly roll quilt, a Bargello Rainbow, and a Tula Pink Butterfly in rainbow colors.  She suggests to Google or search on Pinterest with the term “Rainbow Quilts.” This way you will not only come up with inspiration, but maybe even a pattern you’d like to use!  Remember that quilts for Sisters do not have to be original designs, so don’t feel stressed to design something new if you’ve never designed something before.

Kimberly also brought some gadgets to help find color values including a red lens, a green lens and a 3-In-One color tool.  Another gadget she suggests is using numbered pins to keep your cut pieces/blocks organized.

Information for our Charity efforts was presented next.  We still need Zipper Bags! Find out more information about this effort on our webpage.  August 24th is our next charity sew day at Modern Domestic from 10-4. At these charity sew days, everything is provided, just bring yourself!  Be on the lookout at our meetings for ways you can contribute towards our charity program. Visit the table to pick up a wonky star block, a quilt to piece, quilt, or bind and to chat with the charity committee on other ways you can help.

2017 Officers Tania and Tamara are continuing to work on a travelling exhibit of our Words, Unbound challenge quilts.  This exhibit will include not only the quilts from Sisters, but any other quilt created as part of the challenge. To find out more information about this exhibit and to see all of the quilts submitted so far, visit our webpage for more information.  To submit your quilt, please email the guild at portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com

Next, Susan presented information about our upcoming Programs and Workshops.  The Anna Maria Horner classes went on sale last week and are currently sold out.  If you’re interested, be sure to visit the webpage about Anna and sign up on the waitlists.  We were able to move 7 people off of the waitlist for our workshops with Chawne Kimber, so sign up on the waitlist soon!

Fabric dyer Anna Joyce will be speaking at our August 16th guild meeting.  We will also be hosting a three hour workshop on August 25. The fee for this class is $30 plus a materials fee of $20.  During the workshop you’ll learn all about Indigo dyeing and dye two tea towels.

We’ll also be hosting Christina Cameli for a free motion workshop entitled Free Motion Quilting:  Textures and Grids on September 8th from 10-4. Christina was our speaker for our January meeting and is a fantastic instructor of Free Motion quilting via her books and Craftsy classes.  The cost for this workshop is $60.

Both Anna Joyce’s and Christina Cameli’s classes will go on sale this Tuesday, July 24th at 6pm  Scholarships are currently open and will accept names until Monday, July 23rd at 8 pm.  Visit the PMQG pages linked above to apply.

Denyse Schmidt will be our featured speaker for our guild meeting on December 6th.  On December 7th, we’ll be hosting her for her workshop Free Wheeling Single Girl and on December 8th, we’ll be offering the workshop, Woven.  Find out more information about these workshops on our webpage, and be sure to mark the day they go on sale, August 15th at 6pm. If these classes sell out quickly, we’ll also be creating a waitlist for both workshops, so be sure to sign up on them as soon as possible!  The scholarships available for these workshops will open up for applicants on August 6th.

Members need to make sure they pick up their Kaleidoscope Challenge fabric.  Each member that sign up will receive 10 fat quarters (FQ) of Alison Glass’s new Kaleidoscope line.  Using this fabric, members need to create a mini quilt using at least 6 of the colors. Because there has been such high demand for this challenge, we’re requesting that any fabric that has been unused in the challenge be returned to us so members on the waitlist can participate.  For all of the challenge rules, be sure to check out the challenge page here.

Next, Susan introduced the July Fabric Fundraiser.  Members donated fabric from their stashes for the sale and all of the money raised will be split evenly between Raphael House and Butterfly Boxes.  Members were incredibly generous and PMQG raised a total of $2,108.   One generous member approached the board and offered to match our total for a whopping $4,216 raised!  Each organization will receive $2,108!  Thank you so much to the anonymous member!

Next, we held our raffle.  The winners were:

Susan Paris won the Fabric donated by a PMQG member and a pattern donated by Crimson Tate.

Helen Hayes won the bag donated by Violet Craft, batting donated by Quilter’s Dream and a rotary cutter donated by Olfa.

Donna G won the book Glorious Patchwork donated by a PMQG member and a fat quarter bundle donated by Art Gallery Fabrics.

Our sixth Bespoke Block of the Month was debuted, the Houndstooth.  Rather than using strip piecing to assemble, Michelle has designed the blocks using half square triangles.  The pattern will show you how to create 8 half square triangles at once.

We ended our meeting with our fantastic show and tell, just look at the amazing quilts presented:

Our next guild meeting is August 16--we hope to see you there!

Remember:  Sisters Word Quilts are due by our June 2nd Open Sew Day!

Greetings Members!  On May 17th, we met for our fifth guild meeting of the year.  Our president, Kimberly opened the meeting by showing members a Creativebug intro video featuring PMQG member Rebecca Rinquist.  Don’t forget that Creativebug has offered PMQG members one free month of membership to new email sign ups by using the code SBA.

Do you have a suggestion for a video to feature?  Please send any suggestions for future videos to portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com

Next, Kimberly welcomed new members and our new business member Cindy Lundy from Stitchy Goodness.  Then we wished all members with a birthday in May a Happy Birthday.

Next, Susan went over the upcoming programs and workshops.  These include Chawne Kimber on June 21, 22 and 23, Anna Maria Horner on November 15, 16 and 17, and Denyse Schmidt on December 6, 7 and 8th.

All of Chawne’s workshops are currently sold out.  Waitlists are available on our website. Details for Anna Maria Horner’s and Denyse Schmidt’s classes will be announced later this year as well as the date the classes will be on sale, so start saving!

Next, Susan introduced out featured speaker for the May Meeting, Alison Glass.  Alison is a fabric designer for Andover Fabrics, and has designed over 600 fabrics for them.  Alison designs with the goal of having her fabrics flow from one collection to another.

P5170779.JPG

Alison also showed the fabric line and designs she was debuting at the Spring Quilt Market while she was here in Portland.  Her fabric line is called Kaleidoscope, and is a woven solids collection. Designs debuted include:

Trinket, made using paper piecing

Trinket, made using paper piecing

Lumen, made using paper piecing.

among others. Be sure to follow Alison Glass on Instagram @alisonglass and through her website. Watch out for announcements for a sewalong this fall for Trinket!

Next, we announced a special collaboration with Alison Glass, PMQG and Anover Fabrics, the Kaleidoscope Fabric Challenge!  We are currently finalizing the rules for this challenge, but they will involve making a mini quilt using either a cool or warm color group of Kaleidoscope, so start thinking of your designs!

Screen Shot 2018-05-20 at 2.13.27 PM.png

Next, we spoke about our Charity programs.  First are many quilts in various stages that you can help make.  Take a packet to make a top, quilt a quilt, or sew some binding. Visit our Charity table to see what’s available.  Also available are wonky stars blocks for sewing as well.

Don’t forget about Charity Sew Day on May 24th at Modern Domestic!

Next, we had our raffle.  We had a total of 6 prizes to give away at this meeting!

Next, Corni from the Central Oregon Modern Quilt Guild presented information for the 2018 PNW MQG Meetup.  It starts Friday, August 10 and lasts until Sunday, August 12th. The meetup is going to be at Grace Baptist Church (63945 Old Bend Redmond Hwy, 9770) in Bend, OR.  Housing will be on your own.

Activities include a Brewery Social, Sunday Park Breakfasts, Swag Bags (only for those who sign up before June 1st!) and Door Prizes, Charity Sewing and a Shop Hop.  The cost is $40 for MQG members and $60 for MQG non-members. If you have any questions, please email COMQG@hotmail.com or CorniQ@me.com.  You can find the registration here.

Don’t forget that Sisters Word Quilts are due by June 2nd.  The PMQG Special Exhibit has always hung on buildings, which include Paulina Springs Books Co.  Brad Smith, owner of Paulina Springs Books Co. is gravely ill. We request that members send messages of support to:  Paulina Springs Books, PO Box 3500-407, Sisters, OR 97759, or via email to books@paulinasprings.com, subject line:  For Brad. This is a sad time and it will be a huge loss to our Sisters and our Quilt Show Community.

The 2019 Sisters Special Exhibit theme has been decided on, and will be Rainbow Quilts.  More information to come!
