Upcoming Lectures & Workshops

July online guild meeting: Featuring Robert Bosscher

Thursday, July 17 @ 6:00pm
Be Positive about Negative Space

In this lecture, we’ll dig deeper into how to define and identify negative space, as well as understand how it interacts with the other elements of art in a design. We will look at examples of negative space in both the design and art world, as well as in modern quilting, to help gain confidence in being able to identify and articulate its unique properties in influencing design. Finally, we’ll explore ways of incorporating this element into your own quilts, strategies for becoming more comfortable in utilizing negative space, and tips for keeping a critical and objective eye as you evaluate your success in using this often misunderstood element of art!

Robert is an artist who often struggles to know just what that means. He eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan for college, where he studied Studio Art and Art History. While his creative endeavors have included ceramics, painting, and other mediums, his current passion lies in fiber and textile art - namely quilting. As a child of a quilter, he is also drawn to the emotional resonance that quilts have as objects of comfort and care.

Find the Value in Your Stash

As a former textile and apparel designer, Blair has a keen understanding of color, the relationships between them, and how to apply them to our quilts. Colors, as well as meaningful fabrics inspire my quilt design. She enjoys playing with the traditional idea of the “scrappy quilt”in a more modern way.

Understanding and using the color value differences between your fabrics in an intenional way can be a powerful design tool. It can create unique “sparkle” to your work. In this lecture, Blair will take you through a practical exploration of color value relationships between fabrics in your stash, how to understand it, and more importantly how to use it in your quilts. You will leave with brand new inspiration for your existing stash!

We will cover concepts like using the same fabric for different values, how to set design parameters that inspire you, and making consistent design decisions in a complex design like this. Suitable for intermediate quilters.

Note: This workshop requires the purchase of the Starflake quilt pattern per student.

Scholarship will open on Sunday, September 7, and close on Saturday, September 13.

Quilts Coats: Then and Now

Teresa Coates is nationally known sewing educator, accomplished quilt maker, travel writer, pattern designer and relentless adventurer. She designs her own line of patterns at Crinkle Dreams, including patterns for beginners and more experienced sewists. Teresa is the host of "Make with Teresa Coates," a monthly live sewing show and was host of “Sew Together Tuesday™” from 2020-2024. She has inspired her audience to fall in love with sewing at nearly 100 local quilt shops in 42 states since 2016—the LQS is her favorite place to be.

Her lecture is about quilt coats, which are everywhere these days. But did you know that quilted clothing has been around since the 14th century? With a long history and several periods of popularity, quilt coats have both evolved and stayed remarkably the same. This is a fun discussion of what has come before, ways to incorporate quilt making into your garment sewing and how you can make a quilt coat that will not only keep you warm, but show off your quiltmaking skills.

JANUARY online guild meeting:
Featuring Carolina Oneto

Thursday, January 16 @ 6:00pm
Playing with Color Value

During this lecture we will talk about many different topics related to color, especially about what value is and why it is so important when is time to choose and pick your fabrics for a new project. I will show you through different examples how you can create movement and sequences using color value to design your quilts, creating interest, contrast and fluidity.

Geography and the rich textile traditions of Latin America have certainly influenced Carolina’s work as she has lived in Santiago, Chile, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Mexico City, Mexico.

In Buenos Aires, she had the incredible opportunity of learning patchwork with Teresita Leal and Cecilia Koppman, known Argentinian quilters. She makes sure she is able to travel to Quiltcon each February to take classes and learn from other international quilters. She also studied «Color Interaction» with Professor and artist Eduardo Vilches in the Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile.

Her quilts have been exhibited in many Quilt Festivals around the world, including Quilt Week, Quiltcon, and Festival of Quilts. Additionally, her work has been featured at art centers and galleries in Europe, USA and Chile.
