Due to events at the church, our December meeting will be two weeks earlier than usual, on the first Thursday of the month! Join us Thursday, December 5th at 7 pm for a Potluck, Swap, and Holiday Bazaar!
Where: St Andrew Catholic Church, 806 NE Alberta St., Portland, OR 97211 The meeting will be in the community center, which is behind the main church building. There are two parking lots.

Swap:
This year for our Holiday Swap, we'll be swapping containers made by you! This could be a fabric basket or bowl or a pouch, or something else that could fit the definition of "container" and is made out of fabric, by you! Make it special if you like by fussy cutting your fabric or using a fun trim or embellishment!

  • To be gracious, someone worked very hard on what you receive!

  • Extras are allowed, but not required.

Holiday Bazaar:
We'll have our Holiday Bazaar going again this year! What does this mean? That lots of member/vendors will be selling their awesome handmade goods! Just in time for stocking stuffers and other holiday presents!

  • Bring Cash to shop the sale (some members may offer credit card sales, but wifi can be unreliable in the church

  • If you'd like to vend your handmade items (only handmade items, thanks!), please sign up to reserve a table. It's free but you must go through the checkout process!

Anna Maria Horner Workshops!

We're so excited to bring back Anna Maria in January for 3 different workshops! Go to the website link for full info on each workshop and to sign up for a scholarship. Scholarships close on December 4th at 9 pm, and winners will be notified on December 5th.


All workshops will be on sale in the shop on Friday, December 6th at 6 pm.

Applique Stories Workshop

Date: Tuesday, January 28th, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm (1/2 day)

Class Description:  Combining Anna Maria's interest in composing vignettes and handwork, she presents a class that covers all of the techniques necessary to create a visual feast of fabric and stitching. Multiple techniques for applique, raw and turned, by machine and by hand, are shared on top of a lesson in composition.

Folk Flower Block Workshop

Date: Wednesday, January 29th, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location:  TBD
Cost:  $100

Class Description: Anna Maria Horner shares how to use machine reverse applique to create this simple but stunning floral block that can be combined very specifically with others, or more sporadically with some solid blocks for a varied look. She also offers tips of scaling the block to suit each quilter's hopes for their finished design. Because the sewing technique is so straight forward, Anna Maria has plenty of time to work with students one on one for fabric selection process.

Color Fluency Workshop

Date: Thursday, January 30th, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location:  TBD
Cost:  $100

Class Description:  Anna Maria switches up traditional color conventions in order to develop stunning and individual palettes. Beginning with a traditional color wheel, Anna demonstrates how each color interacts with one another depending on its position in the wheel. Then using a fun color palette exercise with fabric,she guides students towards building an adventurous, yet theory based, palette.

If you’re physically able, please put away your own chair, and grab an extra one too if you can! Besides chairs we need assistance putting away tables, equipment, and the stage after meetings too.

November Meeting Recap

We had a great turnout on Thursday, November 21st for author, collector and PMQG member Bill Volckening’s tour through quilting history.  His enthusiasm for the art and craft of our artform was palpable, both in his descriptions and in the quilts he chose to share. His amazing collection of over 500 quilts has taken him 30 years to gather.


Board President Erin Case shared announcements at the beginning of the evening, including congrats to Betty Colburn for having a quilt accepted at the Visions Art Museum in San Diego. Jen Carlton Bailey’s December workshop is all sold old.

Some exciting programs are planned for early 2020, including:

  • Anna Maria Horner will join us for 3 workshops (Applique Stories, Folk Flower Block, Color Fluency) on January 28-30th. Apply for the scholarships at the above link!

  • Lynn Czaban will bring her unique style of quilting portraiture to the guild in March

  • April will feature the abstract quilting artistry of Joe the Quilter, Joe Cunningham 


2020 Memberships are on sale on the website - $45 for PMQG and an additional $12 for MQG. Erin thanked the event organizing committee for putting together the fantastic display at the October Showcase.   Judy Livingston provided a year-to-date review of the guild’s budget, which is coming in with a $1,500 surplus. The perspective 2020 Board of Directors were introduced and enthusiastically voted in for 2020.  The new board volunteers are:

Tamara King shared two projects – her Cut it up! Challenge, creating crosswalk flags for high-accident intersections (patterns available on Instagram) and the 2020 QuiltCon guild quilt that she designed (kits available at the meeting, due back December 5).  

The evening’s door prizes were:

#1-  Inspired Free Motion Quilting donated by Bill Volckening; fabric donated by PMQG; and Flatter donated by Soakwash was won by Shelley McBride.

#2- Inspired Free Motion Quilting donated by Bill Volckening; Warm and White batting donated by Warm Co.; and Flatter donated by Soakwash was won by Angie McG.

#3 - Inspired Free Motion Quilting donated by Bill Volckening; $35 Pink Door Fabric gift certificate; and Flatter donated by Soakwash were won by Dana Huntington.

Fall color Fat Quarter swaps were won by Maddison Stapleton and Laura Guiles.

Our final meeting of the year will be a Potluck on December 5th.  The meeting will also include a container swap, a Bazaar for members who have handmade items to sell, and Show and Tell.  Two quilts will be raffled – the Block of the Month quilt by Sarah Flynn and the 2019 QuiltCon Charity Quilt (proceeds to benefit the Oregon Food Bank.

DECEMBER 2019 Library SCAVENGER HUNT!

PMQG has a fabulous resource that you may not be aware of – the Library. It has many excellent items that you can borrow for free.  The Library and information on how to use it can be found on the PMQG website under the Resources tab. To learn about what the Library contains, how to find it, and how to use it, there will be a scavenger hunt with prizes to be awarded at the December Holiday meeting.  Please join in to learn about what is available and maybe win a prize!

To enter the scavenger hunt and be eligible for a prize, all you need to do is answer the scavenger hunt questions and email the answers to the guild by December 2nd at 5:00 p.m.

This month the theme for the Fat Quarter Lotto is: Autumn Inspired Fabric!
Bring 1 or more FQs that fit the theme to be entered into the drawing to win a stack of FQs! Interpret "Autumn" fabric however you like, it could be a palette of oranges, yellows, and browns, leaf or tree fabric, or maybe woodland creatures!

November Presentation:
Continuing our celebration of 10 Years of PMQG, this month's presentation will be by PMQG Member Bill Volckening, Quilt Collector and Author!

Bill Volckening calls himself a quilt magnet because of his uncanny ability to find great quilts, but he did not originally set out to be a quilt collector. When he bought his first quilt in 1989, he intended to display it on a wall in his home, but realized the quilt was too old and valuable to hang perpetually. So he found another quilt and planned to rotate the two. As the decor evolved, he bought quilts to fit in with the furniture or paint color. When he moved into his first house, he had more walls...so he bought more quilts. Still, collecting quilts was just a hobby.

At times, Bill made efforts to share quilts with local quilt guilds, women’s groups and in exhibits. But for years his collection was unknown to most people. He bought a lot of quilts online, and steadily built the collection despite having little involvement with the quilt community. He collected for 20 years and hardly anyone knew.

In 2009, Bill showed his collection of New York Beauties to a local quilt study group, and the quilt history enthusiasts gave him a new perspective on his collection. It was something more. He made an effort to share the quilts from that point forward, and it led to many opportunities; most notably, his new book “New York Beauty, Quilts from the Volckening Collection” published by Quiltmania in France (2015).

Dingbats Redux Workshop with Sam Hunter

Class Description:
*Currently open to PMQG Members as well as non-PMQG members (non PMQG members will be charged an additional $10 fee* Class price includes a PDF copy of the pattern!

Dingbats Redux is a modern block based quilt with NO curved or set-in piecing. The quilt has two sizes of blocks, set into a generously sized lap quilt.

Skills: all straight seams, some bias edges, good 1/4'' seam accuracy needed, templates.

In class, we start with a fabric discussion, tuning fabric selections for the best results. Then we get to sewing, making one or two blocks for the day. We'll cover accurate 1/4'' seam setup, cutting with templates, stacked ruler cuts, tips for managing bias.

Sam is a fun, encouraging, and relaxed teacher who irons and rips for her students, and provides chocolate!

BAUHAUS CURVES WORKSHOP WITH JEN CARLTON-BAILLY

What better way to end an amazing year, celebrating our 10 years, than with a custom workshop from our own Jen Carlton-Bailly?!

Jen Carlton Bailly is the founding president of PMQG and an acknowledged master of curves. In July 2017, we were honored to have her to teach a “curvealicious workshop,” at the lovely LaGuinitas Community Center.

You can find Jen offering her expertise on curves on the Modern Quilt Guild website and in the Fresh Quilting series, at QuiltCon and just about anywhere you might find quilters of the modern aesthetic.

This year, in preparation for our 2020 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Theme, “The Bauhaus Movement,” Jen will be offering a special class, just for our guild.

Since the Bauhaus teaching method was really focused on design being a collaboration between students and masters, the intention is that this class will work in a similar fashion.

Rather than designing a whole quilt that people would copy, we will embrace our Bauhaus theme, and learn several different ways of doing one block and letting your creativity go from there!

What a beautiful evening for our third annual PMQG Showcase at Lagunitas! We showed 32 Painters Palette Paintbrush Solids Minis and 27 Figo Fabrics Minis and 25 member quilts. What: A showcase of member's quilts from the past 10 years, plus Mini Quilt Challenges and prizes for our Figo Prints Challenge and our Painter's Palette Paintbrush Solids Challenge! Food and drink supplied

A Call for Quilts!

The Lake Oswego Library is calling for quilts/wall hangings of marine life to promote our community read selection Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore by Elizabeth Rush.

Quilts to hang during the Lake Oswego Reads program Jan 1-March 5th.

Sizes: Minis to king with sleeves

Bio boards: Please provide any info pertaining to process, recipient or marine life depicted you want to share with patrons. We will produce story boards to each quilt, which will be returned to you. Quilts should be labeled Not For Sale or provide pricing and contact info.

Drop off: Collection of quilts will be at the December meeting or make arrangements with Lilly Logan.

Return of quilts: At the March meeting quilts will be returned unless prior arrangements have been made.

Promotion of exhibit will be in brochures delivered to every house in Lake Oswego as well as the Lake Oswego Review and the Lake Oswego Reads website.

PMQG September Meeting Recap

We had a packed house on Thursday, September 21 for guest Annabel Wrigley who joined us from Virginia to talk about her Doodle Quilts. Board VP Chris Batten did an amazing job of keeping the meeting going despite the power outage on the wall that powers our cordless mics.

Before kicking off the evening’s presentation, we celebrated some of the fantastic creations in the Figo Fabrics challenge. Chris previewed two of the terrific programs already planned for 2020 –


Annabel’s program included displays of her unique improv abstract creations, using solids, that combine fabric fused in layers, clear thread applique and tight straight-line quilting. Her technique was featured in this issue of Mod Block Quilting.

Fat Quarter Halloween swap winners were Virginia H, Brittany Scott, and Jennie McKee. "I am an Aussie mum, author and designer living in rural Virginia. I own Little Pincushion Studio, a sweet little space where I teach many little sewing pixies everything they need to know to go forth and conquer the world of sewing and creating. When I am not teaching, I am busy coming up with a million and one projects for my kids sewing classes and designing quilt fabric for Windham Fabrics.

I offer step-by-step video classes through Creativebug — an online subscription site. They have hundreds of classes in their library, making it very likely that you will find something for all the creative folks in your family, big and small."

Dingbats Redux Workshop with Sam Hunter

Class Description:

Dingbats Redux is a modern block based quilt with NO curved or set-in piecing. The quilt has two sizes of blocks, set into a generously sized lap quilt.

Skills: all straight seams, some bias edges, good 1/4'' seam accuracy needed, templates.

In class, we start with a fabric discussion, tuning fabric selections for the best results. Then we get to sewing, making one or two blocks for the day. We'll cover accurate 1/4'' seam setup, cutting with templates, stacked ruler cuts, tips for managing bias.

Sam is a fun, encouraging, and relaxed teacher who irons and rips for her students, and provides chocolate!

October Showcase
Our 3rd Annual October Showcase is fast approaching! This is a wonderful event held at a different location and slightly earlier start time than our usual meetings. Spend the evening admiring fellow PMQG member's beautiful quilts (including the mini quilts from our 2 current challenges), eating, drinking, and socializing with fellow members!

August 2019 Meeting Recap

A big thank you goes out to PMQG Member, Gail and her husband who own Phantom Chicken. We partnered with them to run a fundraiser for the guild to sell PMQG branded shirts. Thank you to everyone who purchased a shirt!

It was a warm evening at our August 15th meeting, but still a great turn out.   President Erin Case welcomed everyone and thanked our business sponsors – Modern Domestic, Montavilla Sewing Centers, and Aloha Sewing and Vacuum.  August birthdays were acknowledged and new members were thanked with some cool FQs.

It was exciting to see the fun and creative ways members used the Paintbrush Studio solids.  We had a parade of participants showing off before the evening’s activities kicked into gear.  They’ll all be displayed at the Showcase on October 17th. If you missed the deadline to submit your mini, don’t worry!  You can turn it in for display at our September meeting. However, the only prize you’ll be able to win is viewer’s choice at the Showcase.  Reminder to those creating in the Figo Fabrics challenge to bring finished quilts to the September meeting. There is still fabric available in the second challenge for anyone who wants to sign up.

Kimberly introduced the evening’s speaker Katie Pedersen, a founding member and former President of the Seattle guild. Originally from Michigan, her work has been heavily influenced by Amish books and quilts.  She had an impressive array designs incorporating half-square triangles and improvisational works. 

After the break, we passed out  “sorbet” themed fat quarter lottery stacks to Lindsay Oldani and two to Cathy Gibson.  Great door prizes included:

Lucky Jean Kelly won two of the evening’s door prizes - Hex templates, Sew Tites, Bagalini bag and Moda honeycombs; and Pink Zuma 10” squares, Quilters Dream batting, and a Preppy Pod pattern. The Curated Quilts improv issue and a fantastic Allison Glass prize package were won by Ellen M.

Erin made additional announcements with a call for volunteers to organize the MQG Pacific Northwest Meet Up (hosted by PMQG) next year. We are also looking for a committee head for this event! 

There is a need for new planners for the Retreats going forward, and board elections will take place in October.  The VP of Social and Technology slot has one self- nomination, but all roles are open and need your engagement!

This guild is completely volunteer run, and without leadership, your guild can not put on the exciting programming, fabric challenges, showcases, or workshops you've come to rely on.  You do not need to have leadership experience--just a willingness to learn, and an excitement for the guild!

A reminder that Bauhaus-inspired designs for the 2020 Sisters’ show are due in February (show is July 11) . 

Member voting for the 2020 QuiltCon charity quilt (theme: Text) is a Martin Luther King quote design by Tamara King.  As it was popular in the voting and she is excited to lead, Sara Flynn will pull together a group for the Bee competition and enter her “uterus” quilt. Sara already has a display commitment at Finger Bang in Portland.

October Showcase organizer Maria Cardenas invited members to submit quilts made in the last ten years to display along with the Fabric Challenge participants. Quilts from past 10 years will be accepted and members can submit up to 5.  An independent artist will be jurying these submissions. All details on website – one form per quilt + photos. Submission deadline is September 1.  

We closed out the business portion of the meeting with announcements about the July Fabric Fundraiser.  Sixteen hundred dollars was raised from shoppers and donors with a 100% match from a guild member. We split $3200 among our three charities ($1440 for Community Works – who were on-hand to accept a check - and $1440 to Human Solutions.  PMQG started a brand-new sewing program (with tools and supplies, teaching, etc.) for women at the shelter. Additionally, $320 in cash was awarded to Scrap and about 150-200 pounds of fabric, craft supplies, and books.

Then our members showed off some gorgeous creations during Show and Tell!

July 2019 Meeting Recap

We need to hear your voice!  All of the design submissions for the 2020 QuiltCon Charity Quilt are in!  To have your voice heard, be sure to vote for your one favorite quilt here.  The quilt design selected by the guild will be patterned and kits made for members to pick up at the upcoming meetings for sewing.  Voting will be open for one week. 


On Thursday the 18th, we met for our 7th meeting of the year for our 2nd Annual July Fabric Fundraiser.  This year’s fabric fundraiser benefited Human Solutions, specifically their Lilac Meadows Project, Community Warehouse and ScrapPDX.  A big thank you to all of our members who donated fabric, volunteered to run the sale and all of our members who shopped.  Thanks to your efforts, we raised a total of $1,540!  

Announcements:

A gentle reminder that visitors to the meeting are allowed only one free meeting.  If you decide not to join the guild, but want to continue to attend meetings, all other meetings are $5/meeting.

PMQG Library will be hosting a scavenger hunt next month--with prizes!  Be sure to familiarize yourself with the library and all it has to offer before then!

July’s New Member Mixer has been postponed due to a street festival.  The rescheduled date is August 18th from 4 - 6:30 at The Cotton Cure, 133 SE 3rd Avenue, Hillsboro.  Signups will be available on August 3rd at 10:00 am.

  • Katie Pedersen’s PMQG workshops went on sale July 19th at 10:00 am. At the time of this writing we have spots in both of her workshops, Double Trouble and Crushed it. Both workshops are priced at $65.

  • Annabel Wrigley of Little Pincushion Studios will be visiting PMQG in September. The scholarship for her Doodle Workshop opens up for applicants on August 5th, while general sales will open up on August 15th.

  • Quilt Show Coordinator - We’ve been messaged with opportunities for hosting a quilt show/sale for a local church. In order to make this happen, we’re in need of someone who can run this small show as well as others in the future.

  • 2020 PNW MQG Meetup - this committee’s chair, Mary Ann is looking for others to join her in planning the 2020 PNW MQG Meetup. Guilds from around the Pacific NW are invited for a weekend of sewing and other activities.

  • 2020 Retreats Committee - Have you been to a lot of our retreats and have great attention to detail? Then you are perfect to join our 2020 Retreats Committee. Our current committee is stepping down, and if you’d like the guild to continue to offer these enjoyable weekend experiences, we’ll need your help in organizing them!

  • 2020 Executive Board - We’ll be starting our search in earnest for members to join the 2020 Executive Board. To find out what is involved with each position, check out our Volunteer page for more information. We will be taking nominations for the board from now until October. We’ll be voting on the next board as well as any other bylaw amendments at the end of October/beginning of November, and all of the results will be announced at the November meeting.

If you’re physically able, please put away your own chair, and grab an extra one too if you can! Besides chairs we need assistance putting away tables, equipment, and the stage after meetings too.

Guests and non-members are welcome at guild meetings. Guests are free for the first visit; $5 for each visit after that. Please remember that to keep the guild running we need your support! June 2019 Meeting Recap

President Erin Case kicked off the meeting by reminding members with June birthdays to pick up an extra raffle ticket. She reminded us of the coming Sam Hunter : Dingbats Redux” workshop (which is being rescheduled, stay tuned for new date) and the exciting upcoming meeting events – July Fabric Fundraiser and October Quilt Showcase.

July Fabric Fundraiser
The fabric fundraiser can include fat quarters or yardage, clothing, books and notions. We are supporting three charities this year: Human Solutions, Community Warehouse, and Scrap PDX. Sales must be check or cash-only. We cannot process credit card payments that evening. We are in need of volunteers to help run the sale! A special note, volunteers get first pick of items. Please visit our Fabric Fundraiser webpage to sign up to volunteer!

October Quilt Showcase
Maria is organizing the showcase this year and would love to have your help (set up and take down)! Mini-quilts made in the two fabric challenges will be shown along with juried quilts selected from member submissions. Submissions start July 19 and can include anything completed in the last 10 years (to commemorate our anniversary). Cannot include items shown in past showcases. September 1st is when submissions end and participants will be notified by September 9. There is limited space available and will require an RSVP (up to 120 people). More information about RSVPs to come at a later date. There will be drink, good eats, door prizes, and prizes for the mini challenges. We are in need of food donations, please email the guild if you have any suggestions for who we can contact.

Fabric Challenges and PMQG Pins
Participating members received Figo Fabrics and/or Paintbrush Studios fabrics for the 2019 Fabric Challenges as they checked in. We continued to hand out commemorative PMQG enamel pins. There are still members who have not picked up, so if your dues are all paid up for 2019, ask us for your pin!

100 Blocks in 100 Days
Patterns by Gnome Angel were available for anyone looking to take on the 100 blocks in 100 days (scroll to lower half of page) challenge, which is a PMQG fundraiser. A quilt selected from participants will win a prize! Be sure to use the hashtag to enter to win! #pmqg100days100blocks

It was exciting to welcome one of our founding members, Elizabeth Hartman, to tell us about her approach to design and fabric design. As we tripped through the fields and jungles with her magical animals, she provided insight into color, mixing solids and prints, repeating patterns, and in-surface design. She is newer to the world of fabric design and has been purposely bundling pattern themes with her fabric design in recent years.

May Meeting Recap


President Erin Case kicked off the meeting with a short video promoting a film being shown at the NW Film Center on Monday, May 20 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. A great way to be further inspired by this powerful 20th century art movement for the 2020  Sisters Quilt Show PMQG theme. You can watch the trailer at the top of this post.

Smiling members received our beautiful anniversary enamel pin on their way in the door. We’ll have them at all of our upcoming meetings, so if your dues are all paid up for 2019, pick up your pin!

After a short introduction where she thanked business members Modern Domestic, Aloha Sewing and Vacuum and Montavilla Sewing Centers, Erin welcomed new members and guests and introduced speaker and member Irena Swanson. Irena, who by day is not-surprisingly an accomplished math professor.  Irena clued the membership in to the tips and tricks of streamlined quilt piecing.  You can get hands-on help with this efficient way of quilt-making at Irena’s Herringbone Quilt Workshop tomorrow, Saturday 18th, spaces are still available.

In addition to Irena’s workshop, our own Sam Hunter is offering her Dingbats Redux workshop at Mill End on June 29.

Lots of chances to participate at the May meeting! Over 60 dotted fat quarters were collected from members and were taken home by Michelle Marcus-Boyer (2 sets!), Marika Zimmerly-Beck and Kazumi Peterson.

Fabric Challenges

Board VP Chris Batten reminded everyone about the rules for the two Fabric Challenges (solids from Paintbrush Studios and prints from Figo Fabrics).  For those members who had signed up for the solids challenge, fabric was distributed at the meeting.  Solications for participation in the Figo Fabrics challenge will start June 8th

This month we're excited to welcome Irena Swanson! Irena will share her unique quilting methods that save time and increase accuracy. Irena will also be teaching a Herringbone Quilt Workshop using her methods on Saturday, May 18th.

Fabric Challenges:

PMQG has 2 upcoming challenges for 2019: Paintbrush Studio Painter’s Palette Solids Challenge and Figo Fabrics Print Challenge. For each challenge, members will receive 9 or 10 fat quarters and will make a mini quilt to be shown at the PMQG October Showcase. Space is limited to 40 members per challenge and each person may only sign up for and receive 1 challenge or the other, not both.

Our April meeting started out with a few technical difficulties, oops! Thank you to everyone for being so patient as we figured it out! With President Erin out of town, Mary Ann and Kimberly B. led April's meeting. Special thanks to members Rachel C. and Elise for stepping up and helping out with the tech issues and Joyce for working the Fat Quarter Lotto station!

April's meeting was all about the Sisters Quilt Show! Board members presented ideas for our PMQG Sisters Quilt Exhibit theme for 2020. Those ideas were:

  • Maximalism

  • TEN

  • Gaudi

  • Mosaic

  • Positive Space

  • Centennial of 19th Amendment

Design Week Portland

April 6 - 13

Design Week Portland is a week-long festival with hundreds of events, talks, exhibitions, tours, workshops and open studios.  Programming illustrates what is new and interesting in the field of design from the perspective of designers who work across many practices - from graphic design and architecture, to fashion and apparel, to industrial design.  Discussions and demonstrations take place in every corner of the city from April 6 - 13.  The events are accessible to the public with a range of price points, including many free or low-cost options.

Our tenth anniversary meeting on March 21 was a well-attended celebration with lots of time to enjoy cake after Sam Hunter’s fascinating talk. Erin welcomed new members with complimentary fat quarters and celebrated March birthdays. Thanks to Figo Fabrics, all members snagged a colorful charm pack on their way in the door.

Erin challenged long-time members to chat with people they don’t know and reminded everyone car pools are being organized via the PMQG website. Additional announcements included a reminder that the April meeting has been moved to April 25th due to a religious holiday at the church. One of the guild’s business members, Cotton Cure, is now open in Hillsboro. Hunter’s Design Studio has joined the guild as a business member this month.


Sam took us on a fascinating tour through the history of words on quilts and fiber arts, which ended in a very personal, and at times, teary story of her artistic evolution. Her talk culminated in her recently award-winning work “Why I’m A Feminist” which took third in the handwork category at QuiltCon. On display were some of her earlier works, including a series of stamped hospital gowns.

Irena Swanson will be teaching her Simple Herringbone Quilt Workshop on May 18th from 10-2.  Irena is an expert at streamlining her sewing by sewing, and you’ll want to take this workshop to learn this process.  The scholarship will be open for applications from April 27 - May 3, and the workshop will go on sale on May 4th.

Sam Hunter will be teaching her Dingbats Redux Workshop on June 29th from 10 - 5.  This dynamic quilt is made of two different sized blocks and  is made without curves or set in pieces! The scholarship will go live for applications from April 27 - May 3rd, and this workshop will also go on sale May 4th.  



The Spring Retreat, happening in 3 weeks, is currently sold out with one on the waiting list. If you are interested, please sign up for the list as we’ve been able to accommodate several who wanted to add.

The 2019 Fall Retreat will go on sale Saturday June 21 for people not attending the spring retreat. Registration will open to all 2 weeks later.


This past weekend, the PMQG sponsored an exhibit of our member’s word quilts at the Northwest Quilters 45th annual show. We will also have an exhibit at the Clark County Quilt Show March 28-30 in Vancouver. Umpqua County Quilt Show “Reflections of the Northwest” at Douglas County Fairgrounds in Roseburg April 26-28th .


The March fat quarter swap of PMQG logo colors generated a lot of participation and Tracy Dunlap, Sailor Holladay, Renee Pype, Christine Yi, and Jessica Dahmen all took away stacks of more than 10 fat quarters each.

Sara Flynn introduced this month’s Block of the Month, Moons of Verner, continuing with the Mod Block Party theme.  Be sure to download your instructions on our website.


New VP of Technology and Social Media, Mary Ann Morsette, has organized a New Member Mixer on May 11 at Cool Cottons from 5:00-7:30pm. Cool Cottons will be closed, but members can shop and meet new folks while enjoying some light refreshments.

Once again, PMQG members proved to be generous and talented, donating 26 quilts to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in February. This year, we are donating charity zipper bags to the Portland Homeless Family Solutions.  Kits for both charity quilts and zipper bags are at the charity table.


The board suggested a ruler library to supplement the book library the guild maintains. We need your input about what rulers you’d like included here.

We had three Door Prizes for our March Meeting.  Our first set of prizes included a calendar from Curated Quilts, Island Batik fabric from Fabric Depot and the Mini Mod Dog kit from My Quilting Loft.  This prize pack was won by Laurisa Stubblefield.  Our second Door prize set was a calendar from Curated Quilts, 8 FQ from Figo Fabric’s Tropical Jammin’ collection and Soak and Flatter from Soak Wash.  This prize pack was won by Petra Anderson.  Our third set of prizes included a calendar from Curated Quilts and a 14 piece FQ bundle by Figo Fabric’s Mountain Meadow collection.  This final prize pack was won by LouAnn Tiedemann.  

We finished our meeting with a fantastic Show and Tell!

March Meeting Reminder

Please join us this Thursday, March 21st at 7pm, for our March meeting and 10th anniversary celebration!

The meeting will be in the community center, which is behind the main church building. There are two parking lots.

March Fat Quarter Lotto:
For this month's FQ lotto, please bring a fat quarter in a color inspired by our logo for our anniversary!  Choose a print or solid in bright turquoise/blue, pink, lime green, or black. Everyone who enters an FQ will receive an entry into the drawing to win the entire pile (or split into 2 or 3 piles/winners if we have many entries!)


March Presentation:
This month we're excited to welcome our very own Sam Hunter of Hunter's Design Studio! Sam will be presenting her lecture and trunk show "The History of Word Quilts." Also on display will be Sam's QuiltCon winner for Third place in Handwork, "Why I'm a Feminist." She will have copies of her book, Quilt Talk, available for purchase along with over 60 of her patterns! Sam will accept cash, check, or credit/debit payments via Square and offer special discounts for PMQG members.

On the super cold February 21st evening, we had a great turn-out to share our love of all things creative and made of textiles! Many of our members were in Nashville at QuiltCon including two that were award winners, Sam Hunter took third place in the Handwork category for “Why I’m a Feminist” and Christine Yi, won third among Small Quilts for her “You Are Here.” Matthew Stovall is on-site taking pictures and posting the PMQG Instagram page.

Guild President Erin welcomed 17 new members and celebrated February birthdays in addition to sharing exciting upcoming programming news.

The evening’s speaker, and one of the PMQG’s original members, Susan Beal is offering a Log Cabin Block Party Workshop ($75) on April 27 at Mill End, Beaverton. This workshop goes on sale February 25th at 6pm.

Sheila Sinclair Snyder’s Barn Quilt workshop had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The new date is May 4 and there are 4 spots ($100) available.

PMQG will be hosting Christina Cameli for a Wedge Quilt Workshop ($75) on April 6 from 10:00 - 4:00 at Kenton Historic Firehouse.  Workshop goes on sale 2/28 at 6:00 pm. Scholarship is available, apply at the class link above.  


The April meeting is being pushed back a week to April 25 because a religious holiday conflicts with our original date.

The prolific author of 9 books, Susan Beal took us on a lovely journey down the path of her crafty evolution from making clothing and jewelry for Portland shops to expert Log Cabin designer and artist. Members were able to comb through 22 years of her quilting journals containing drawings, instructions, and fabric swatches during the break. She provided tips on getting quilting labels made and invited everyone to join her at a Book Signing Party at Portland Craft bar on March 9, Saturday. Embroidery, books, and refreshments!

PMQG/MQG

We finally have resolution on the MQG membership issue, thanks to results from a member survey, the hard conversations had by the volunteer task force, and board member Sara Flynn’s inquiry to the MQG about split membership fees. Our members were split virtually in half on the survey question of potentially leaving the MQG. Fortunately, a solution that serves both audiences was crafted.

PMQG will have two levels of memberships offered. The first is a local membership at a cost of $45.

The benefits of a local membership include:

  • Monthly Meetings

  • Sew Days

  • Charity Sew Days

  • Hand Sew Happy Hour

  • Special Events

  • Retreats

  • Workshops

  • BOM

  • Guild Level Voting

The second level of membership is a Local + National membership. For 2019 this requires an additional $10 fee. For members who this is a financial hardship, please email the guild and we can waive this fee for 2019 only.

The benefits of a Local + National Membership include the above benefits as well as:

  • Access to the MQG Online Community

  • Access to MQG Monthly Webinar Series

  • Access to free monthly quilt patterns and Block of the Month Series

  • Able to vote in MQG Board Elections

  • Opportunity to participate in inter-guild swaps and challenges

The board will make the effort to hear from every member what their preference is. If you’d like to have the Local + National membership, please notify us by either purchasing the add on fee in our web shop or emailing us for the fee waiver.

Anyone who wants a Local only Membership, should complete the form here. We need our members to notify us their preference by March 20th so we can pay the appropriate dues to the MQG for 2019.

We anticipate that PMQG dues will change for 2020, depending on the numbers of members who opt for each level of membership. This decision will be made in late Fall/Early Winter.

PMQG Anncoucements

Erin shared reminders about the many projects PMQG sponsors that you can participate in and outlined the still-open volunteer 2019 roles.

The next Open Sew Day is at Mill End Beaverton on March 2. The guild can hang quilts at Mill End from March 1 – May 1, participants are first come, first serve. If you’d like to submit your quilt, please email an image to the guild!

Mary Ann Morsette provided additional details about the Spring Retreat, which sold out faster than any to date. There is one open slot open and Mary Ann encouraged people to get on the waiting list if they are still interested.

Mary Ann also announced plans for a Fall Retreat at Menucha in Corbett, OR from October 25-27. The price will be under $200 and only two nights. The venue is more rustic, has one large sewing room, and good food. Registrations will be open for two days on June 21st, first to members who did not attend the Spring Retreat before opening to all on June 23rd .

Entrants for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show challenge Bountiful Rainbows are in the process of being juried. Participants will be notified by February 24th . We still need volunteers to staff the exhibit. Shifts will be around 90 minutes. If you are planning to attend or already have a place to stay, stay tuned for the signups!

The Fat Quarter Lottery of reds had lots of participants with Jessica and Deb walking away with some nifty new fabric to work with.

Our raffle prizes for the meeting were donated by June Tailor, Inc, Lark Cottons, Violet Craft, Tuva Publishing and Benartex Fabrics. Susan Beal donated three prize packs for a total of 6 prizes for the giveaway which also included notebooks from Vintage Fabric Studio! Our winners were Toni, Susan, Donna, Heather, Becky, Angel, and Andrea.
