Our mission is to support, empower and encourage the growth of members within the world of modern quilting and beyond. We hope to accomplish this mission by creating a modern quilt study program that holds space for members in our community to develop skills, showcase talents and explore opportunities.

Submissions are now open for our Block Study series. We are looking for beginner to intermediate quilt block designs with a modern feel. All styles of quilt construction are welcome from traditional piecing, to paper piecing and even applique. Once your design is selected we will supply fabric to make a sample block or full quilt, with fabric generously donated by our sponsor.

Send submissions to portlandmqgsubmissions@gmail.com

Want to learn more about quilt pattern design? Join our small group focused on design creation and process. The Modern Quilt Study group meets once quarterly, in a public space to have a roundtable discussion focused on pattern design.

  • Designs are curated by the Block Study Coordinator, then submitted to the PMQG Board for a blind vote, in which the board members do not know the creator of the block design until after a block is selected.

  • Selected designs are paid $50

  • A simple contract is used giving the PMQG all rights of usage for 1 year, with rights and usage reverting back to the designer after that year, the current industry standard.

  • Pattern submissions are only open at this time to current Portland Modern Quilt Guild members.

  • Full block and/or quilt layout pattern does not have to be written to submit a design. Send a computer drafted mockup, hand drawn picture or picture of a sample block.

Improv Study

About Judy: I grew up in Colorado and learned to sew in 4th grade as part of 4H Club. I never have been able to follow a pattern or recipe exactly, I just love to think up new ideas. After quilting for eight years, I started designing and teaching my own quilt pattern designs in 1987. I worked in the wholesale part of quilting – buying and selling fabric and books, planning trade shows, developing fabric groups for 20 years.  I have self -published books and patterns as Cracked Teapot Productions since 2001.
