March Meeting Reminder & Two Quilting Events!

This Thursday, is our March meeting and it's going to be a fun one! We will be meeting again in the Illustration Studio  - S1 - in the stagecraft building from 7 - 9pm. The door into the building faces NW13th street, if you come after 7:15, knock or call the number on the door and we will run down and open it for ya! Click on our New Room Info page for a map.

You won't want to miss this meeting as we are launching a new challenge sponsored by Michael Miller using their new Cotton Couture fabric! Paid members get to walk away with eight fat eighths of yummy Cotton Couture. If you haven't paid your dues yet, it's not too late! You can renew online by clicking the membership button or in person at the meeting.

Your challenge is to make a patchwork quilt block. Here's the basics we'll have more details at the meeting.

• Finished blocks should measure 15½” wide x 18½” high.

• Blocks should be machine pieced. Any piecing technique is welcome, but please avoid applique, embroidery or other embellishments.

• Blocks should be made using only the Cotton Couture solids received at the meeting. Please do not add any additional fabrics.

• Have fun! We want to see a block that shows your unique voice.

  • Blocks will be due at the April meeting.

Kathy Miller herself will select 16 blocks to be included in a quilt that will be featured in Michael Miller’s booth at Spring Quilt Market 2012 in Kansas City!
Please note that the quilt displayed at market will become the property of Portland Modern Quilt Guild. If your block is included in this quilt it will, by extension, become the property of Portland Modern Quilt Guild and may be displayed on PMQG or Michael Miller’s website or other promotional material.

Did you know that this Saturday is National Quilting Day! We couldn't let it pass by without doing something special! Come join us for some shopping and quilting. Meet up at Bolt at 3pm, this Saturday, March 17th for some yummy shopping. Then hop over to Modern Domestic for some sewing/quilting from 4 -7pm. This is a special event just for PMQG! To sign up in advance for the Modern Domestic Sew-In ($10) click here to reserve your spot. Come join us!

Finally, PNCA is offering a fabric care and preservation class on March 24 10am - 12pm ! It's only $20, quite a few members have already signed up, but there are a few spots left! Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to best restore and take care of your quilts! Click here to sign up.

Sweetwater's Simple Home

Thanks to Susan, I had the chance to sit down and sew with Sweetwater's new Simple Home book published by Stash Books. Authors Lisa Burnett, Karla Eisenach & Susan Kendrick have collected 35 projects to add a handmade touch to every room in a home.

I thought that the "Guest Throw" quilt looked simple and charming (not to mention fast and easy!). I had a jelly roll on hand that I wanted to use, so I picked out 16 strips and got started. This is a very fast and fun project with very clear instructions. My only caution to you, dear reader, is to be as accurate as possible when sewing the strip sets. Be sure to measure your strip sets when you get to Step 5; you may have to adjust the final length. I used the remaining strips from the jelly roll to piece the backing and as a scrappy binding. Quilted up and finished, I think it looks great!

front:

back:

I had leftover fabrics from the strip set and was still having a lot of fun, so I used them up on a couple of pillows. There's a pillow project on page 117 that I took as my inspiration, but I love the look of a quilted pillow-cover (and we are a quilting guild) so I made this one:
2012-03-10_14-32-20_457
which, darling as it is, I'm going to give it away at the next PMQG meeting (mark your calendar for Thursday, 3/15, 7pm).

If you like simple projects with a modern approach, a few (or a lot) of projects in this book will appeal to you. In the quilted category, there are table runners, wallhangings, throw quilts as well as larger quilts. A number of projects could also be quilted--like the pillows, totes, floor cushion, jar labels, chair and notepad covers . . .

All of these projects are "beginner-friendly", which is nice for beginners but also nice for those among us who are looking for a fast project (need a quick gift?). Looking through the book, it was impossible for me to pick a single favorite, and there's a few that are now on my project list. Enjoy!

PMQG charity quilting - January, February, + March

This year we're sharing a different charity quilting opportunity every month for any PMQG members who might be interested. January's featured organization was Bradley-Angle House, a shelter here in Portland that serves women and children escaping domestic violence. As Violet pointed out, it's the only shelter in Portland that's able to keep families living together as they work towards their new lives. Several PMQG members have teamed up to donate both small quilts for the Bradley-Angle families, and fabric for the women's sewing and quilting circles they host! Here's one quilt from our first round of donations in January - blocks donated by Cool Cottons, top and back finished at a Quilts for Quake Survivors bee, and beautifully quilted by Nancy.

February's charity is Craft Hope's littlest warriors project - they're collecting handmade soft hats and tote bags to give to children fighting cancer. The deadline is March 12 and you can make hats and bags for any age kid, from babies to teenagers, boys or girls, just make them colorful and fun! I just wrote up a simple tutorial for making a patchwork tote from two 12" (or similar-sized) quilt blocks, if you're interested in stitching one up too. Mine are log cabin, but any quilt blocks you like would be great! We're hoping to send out a nice PMQG package by the second week of March, so just let us know if you'd like to sew along! You can use any pattern you like - maybe my tote bag or Monica's Pick-a-Pocket Purse?

In March we'll be featuring Quilts of Valor, an organization that collects comforting, healing handmade quilts to give to returning combat veterans in honor of their service. More on them at the March meeting, but if you'd like to donate or sew for any of these charities, we'd love to have you - please email us at portlandmodernquiltguild at gmail.com!

Thank you to everyone who's contributed so far, and to all the members who've emailed with great suggestions for other charities to include this year. We look forward to twelve beautiful months of quilting craftivism with everyone who's interested!

Act 2 Name Tags

There were so many inspiring name tags at this month's meeting thank you to everyone that joined in! There were actually too many for me to photograph in one meeting and a few of my photographs didn't turn out so I'll post more name tags next month. If you haven't had a chance to make one yet these should inspire you. We'll have pin backs available at the next few meetings if you haven't picked one up yet.

Check out our Flickr page to see larger images.

PMQG February Meeting Act 1

This was one jam packed meeting this month so we're dividing the post into 3 acts.
Act 1
We had the pleasure of having Kathy Miller speak at our meeting this month. Kathy is half of Michael Miller along with Michael Steiner together they created Michael Miller Fabrics in 1999.

Kathy was in town to judge AM Northwests Design Challenge. The Design Challenge was created by AM Northwest and Fabric Depot along with The Art Institute of Portland, and Montavilla Sewing Centers. You can see previous episodes here and check out Fabric Depots blog to see photos and summaries. It's the Project Runway of Portland! The challenge last week was to make a cocktail dress out of Michael Miller's new Cotton Couture line of solids. Have you seen/touched them yet? They are buttery soft and have such a nice drape. Kathy said when they created the Cotton Couture line they were going for a fabric that could be used in clothing but also for quilters, something that had a softer hand but was durable as well. With our prodding Kathy went into more detail about weft and warp. The quality of this fabric is achieved by using a finer thread and higher thread count per square inch. There are so many colors to choose from 87 on this card and more coming! Julie the Buyer from Fabric Depot joined us as well and was happy to announce that they will be carrying the full line of colors at Fabric Depot!

The big surprise of the night, Kathy brought a Cotton Couture Color card for everyone at the meeting!! We estimated 90 people in attendance so there was lots of cheering and as I heard one person say from behind me "it's like Oprah!".
Besides Vanilla and Cream there's Soft White and Bright White. Photo by Rachel K.

I've never had a color card before and I'm so excited to have it as a reference when I'm planning my next quilt.
Thank you Kathy for sharing your story and love of fabric. At next month's meeting we'll be revealing a Cotton Couture challenge for our guild members!

Room Update!

This Thursday, February 16th, PMQG will be meeting in a new room. It's in the Stagecraft building across 13th Ave from the Main PNCA building. It's on the corner of NW 13th & NW Kearney Street.

We will meet on the second floor, in room S1 the illustration studio.

We will have a few signs directing you, so watch for our PMQG logo.

As you know, Kathy Miller will be with us this Thursday. She is in Portland judging a new challenge where designers make a cocktail dressing using Michael Miller fabrics. She will be on the AM NW (the morning TV show) this Friday, the 17th for judging the runway show. Click here for more information.

We are so excited for this Thursday! See you then! :)

Have you started your name tag?

I need reminders, lots of them! Post-it notes, lists, bells on my phone, and blog updates! So I thought that a quick reminder would help inspire you to create a name tag to proudly wear to this month's meeting. Here's some more tags to get you inspired:

Also every month, Susan, Ale, Nancy, Petra, and myself will be reviewing sewing/quilting books on our blogs. Then at our meeting, we'll raffle off the same titles! We're really excited to share and kick things off! So this month, Susan and I started it off:
Susan made folded flower bowls from Brett Bara'Sewing in a Straight Line using Monica's fabric.
She'll raffle off these bowls and the book at our meeting, click here for her full post!
Thanks again, Potter Craft!

I (Heather) made Sweet and Sour Apple Coasters from Scandinavian Stitches by Kajsa Wikman published by Stash Books. I'm also raffling off these coasters and the book at our meeting, click here for the full review.

See you Thursday, February 16, 7-9pm
Happy Sewing!

Upcoming Events // Sew Day & Kathy Miller

I don't know about you, but I'm counting down the days, hours, and even minutes until this Saturday's Sew Day! Come to Fabric Depot starting at 9am - 8pm. Stay all day or stop by whenever you can. Sew Days are free for PMQG members or $10 for non-members. There's a lot of room to spread out for sewing or cutting! Feel free to bring an iron, if needed. What project will you bring to work on?

Also, Michelle Freedman will be teaching a hands-on improvisational patchwork sewing demo on at noon on Saturday. Come join in to learn more!

Also, we wanted to share a sneak peek into our next guild meeting (February 16). We're excited to announce that Kathy Miller will be speaking! Kathy Miller is the co-owner of Michael Miller Fabrics. Thanks to Violet Craft, we have the pleasure of hearing a little bit about Couture Cottons and the behind the scenes of Michael Miller Fabrics.

Click here to take a peek!

If you want to find out more about Kathy Miller and her predictions for future fabrics, click here for Sew, Mama, Sew's interview with her!
Make sure to mark your calendars for February 16th!

January Meeting

Our first meeting of the year! We had quite a turn out with a lot of new faces. Thank you all for joining us I hope you had fun.

Our new president Susan led the meeting thanking our previous board and introducing the new one, we'll tell you a little more about us later. One more time thank you Christina President, Michelle Vice President, Rachel Treasure, Katie Secretary, and Megan Programs. It was a fun year and we appreciate all the time and energy you put into the Guild!
Susan also acknowledged all of the guild members that contributed to Quilts for Quakes. Quilts for Quakes sent 30 quilts to Japan, raised $2825 directly for Mercy Corps, plus $660 via the Craft Party at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in June. Thank you for all the fabric donations, sewing, and quilting!  The final few quilts will be going to Bradley-Angle House, in two waves as the last volunteers finish them. We will be posting a little more about Bradley-Angle House soon.

Our ten minute tute this month was all about making your own name tag. After seeing all of the beautiful ones at the Sewing Summit this year we thought it would be fun for our guild to make their own. This is my name tag I made for the Summit.

Mine was made by sewing scraps together for the boarder and stamping my name and website in the center with archival ink. My tip is stamp before you sew so if you have any smudges (like I do) you don't have to start over. Instead of adding binding, I chose to layer my front and back with batting, right sides together, sew, and then turn right side out. If you'd like to do binding on your name tag this is a great tutorial by Kerry of verykerryberry for making single binding for small projects.

Here's a few name tags from the Sewing Summit. You can see the variety in style and size aren't they fun!

At next months meeting we will have a mixer to share everyone's name tags. If you missed this months meeting we do have pin backs for you to use but in the meantime you can use a good ole safety pin or make a lanyard like Angela did above.

Now onto Show and Tell we had a lot of beautiful quilts this month! But really, I think we always do, so I might be biased.
Paula Wessells Garden Auction quilt, garden designed by Kindergarten students and Paula's first time doing applique.

Also by Paula her Do Good Stitches Word Quilt top.

Kelly Cole brought her Retro Bento quilt. Kelly used vintage fabrics for this.

Jolene Knight had a few to share. First made with Christy Cuzza this lattice quilt with scalloped edge.

Jolene's Big Scrap Quilt

and Modern Log Cabin Baby boy quilt.
Sorry Jolene I'm missing one of your photos.

Rachel Kerley shared her example from a quilting demo she and Cherri did at Modern Domestic for the shop's new quilting frame.

Rachel also shared this Triangle Quilt she made using fellow member Jill's TabSlot templates

She also showed this top she made using the scraps. One or both of these will be going to the Children's Relief Nursery.

Kate Sharaf's Drunkards Path quilt top. Kate has been doing a quilt along for this on her blog.

Anne Matlak's River Quilt a beautiful log cabin.

Amorette's Art Gallery Improv Quilt which is a charity quilt and she had a lot of fun with the improv blocks.

Christina Cameli's Double Disappearing Nine Patch quilt top.

Also, her first Spoonflower fabric design of Selvages on Steroids!

Cherri Langley also brought in some Spoonflower fabric First Color Chart which is a copy of the first commercially designed color chart from 1680 fabric by Peagreengirl.

Linda Nussbaum shared two quilts this month I-Spy for Henry who was just born in December and
this Love Summertime Stars quilt top pattern by Fig Tree Quilts.

Aly Good's La Tortuga Quilt. Look closely, you'll be able to see that the turtle shell is three dimensional and there's lovely quilting detail.

Jen Carlton-Bailly shared her Quilted Weekender Bag. Congratulations to Jen the new Social Media Coordinator for the Modern Quilt Guild!

Alexandra Kloch shared her quick and easy snugly blanket that's backed with Minky.

Also, Ale brought this mini snowflake quilt.

HABITAT QUILTS FINISHED!

See all you all in the new year! January 19 at 7pm.

Holiday Meeting this Thursday

We'll see you in Room 101 for a fun holiday potluck meeting on Thursday at 7pm. Quilts, food and even a bit of beer and wine will be on hand (and you are welcome to bring more for Heather, our OLCC licensed server for the evening to officially serve, but no hard liquor please!)

Remember to bring your handmade gift for your holiday swap partner! We'll also be having a membership drive. Bring $25 cash or check if you'd like to pay for your 2012 membership at the meeting. Cards will be available in January, and we will re-open online memberships in January as well.

We will still be having show and tell, so bring a quilt in any stage of completion to show. And if you participated in the KCMQG potholder swap, the potholders will be at the meeting as well!

Can't wait to see you all and taste the yummy treats you bring!

Time Flies: are you sewing yet?

The year is almost over, and for many of us that means holiday sewing deadlines loom. Like the PMQG Swap. Have you finished the gift for your swap partner? Only 8 more days until our December meeting.

And I know everyone's schedules are filling fast, but I do hope you have room for one more All-Day Sew. Come and spend the day with us, and put a big dent in that holiday sewing to-do list. Or ignore it and start a new quilt. Imagine 12 hours of uninterrupted sewing - join us at Fabric Depot, 700 SE 122nd Ave, starting at 9 am this Saturday, December 10. As usual it is free for members and $10 for non-members. There are plenty of tables but remember to bring your sewing machine and any needed accessories (bobbins, pins, presser feet, thread, scissors). It would be great if you could RSVP in the comments.

  • Vice President: Perform the duties of the president if the president is unable (run the meetings, etc), maintain online media (blog, Flickr, Facebook)
  • Secretary: Document officer and member meetings, create or delegate PMQG signage as needed.
  • Treasurer: Manage membership and guild finances.

October News

Oh me oh my, it is the third week of October - Quilt Guild Meeting week!

We will be meeting in room 201 of PNCA (1241 NW Johnson St) from 7-9 pm this Thursday, October 20. We have a special request this month - PNCA is hosting an event in their commons space during the time that we arrive for the meeting and they need us to be quiet as we make our way upstairs to our meeting.

Now, some reminders: if you want to participate in the December swap, your baggie of fabric is due at the October meeting. If you forgot to grab a baggie at the last meeting - that is okay, just fill a sandwich-sized plastic zip bag with fabric you love (it can be scraps) and bring it to the meeting where we will have the info sheets to add to your bag. Don't have a plastic baggie, just bring some of your scraps and we will have some spare baggies too.

If you are scratching your head about this swap... last November we swapped fabric stuffed baggies and in December we all got something back made with our fabric (check out the goodies made last December). We heard that the time frame was too short so this year we decided to do the initial swap in October, giving us two months to make the swap-gift for another member. So stuff that baggie with fabric that you like!

And one of the days we all wait for is at the end of the week: a PMQG All Day Sew! This Saturday (10/22) starting at 9 am we meet at Fabric Depot (700 SE 122nd Ave). The event is free for members and $10 for non-members. There are plenty of tables but remember to bring your sewing machine and any needed accessories (bobbins, pins, presser feet, thread, scissors). If you can bring an iron or extension cord that would be great too.
