March Sew Day Recap

We had back-to-back Sew Days at Fabric Depot this month, February 22 and March 1. I was so busy working on my own projects that I didn't get to take as many pictures as I should have! But here are a couple from last weekend:

Brittany made this paper-pieced My Little Pony pillow, featuring Pinkie Pie (that's a lot of Ps!) It's for a friend's 2-year-old's birthday.  I'm sure she'll love it!



Elsa made the Triple Star block from Modern Bee: 13 Quilts to Make with Friends. It's for a bee, appropriately enough. Look at those lovely points!



Mary Ann finished this top, which was from the Do Good Stitches Faith Circle bee. The pattern is called Scrap Boxes. Once it's completed, the quilt will go to charity.



Jolene pieced this queen-sized quilt for her 13-year-old niece, who is a fan of both purple and horses. Lucky girl!



Kelly taught us how to make notecards using scraps of fabric. You get all the fun of playing with shapes and colors, but it's WAY easier than making a quilt! PMQG will use these as thank-you cards for the sponsors who donate raffle prizes and other goodies ... much nicer than a pre-printed card, don't you think? (We could use more, if you're inspired to make some!)

Medallion Along--February/Round 1

This month we went with a simple 2.5 inch border so that your medallion would have a nice frame around it. Never fear, next month will definitely be more complicated! Each month we hope to provide a couple of options for different skill levels and different time commitments. This month there are directions for with or without cornerstones.

Botanics Medallion Option A--With Cornerstones


Option A--With Cornerstones

  • ›Measure your Medallion and confirm that it is 16.5 inches
  • ›Cut 4 strips of fabric 2.5 inches x 16.5 inches
  • ›Cut 4 squares of contrasting fabric 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches.
  • ›Stitch 2 strips to the left and right side of your Medallion. Press seams outward (towards squares)
  • ›Stitch 2 squares to each side of the remaining two strips to create cornerstones. Press seams inward (towards strip)
  • ›Pin strips to top and bottom of block, aligning ends and butting seams together at the cornerstones.
  • ›Stitch and press seams outward. 
  • ›Measure to confirm that your Medallion quilt is now 20.5 inches square

  • ›Measure and confirm that Medallion is 16.5 inches
  • ›Cut 2 strips at 2.5 inches x 16.5 inches

  • ›Attach larger strips to top and bottom. Press seams outward. Measure and confirm that block is now 20.5 inches

Upcoming Challenges and Exhibits

At Tuesday's meeting we introduced a new Mini Quilt Challenge that ties into our Quilt Knit Stitch! exhibit, as well as a second way to enter the exhibit. Also this week you may have heard about the newest MQG Challenge that is coming up. I know that's a lot of information to throw at you all at once, so here's further explanation for all of these things:

 Michael Miller Glitz Modern Mini Quilt Challenge

The challenge: Make a modern mini quilt with your Glitz fabrics that has dimensions that are in between 12" x 12" and 24" x 24." So, any single side is at least 12 and up to 24. It can be rectangular or round or any other shape as long it is smaller or equal to 24" x 24."

The sponsor: Michael Miller Fabrics

The fabrics: Michael Miller Glitz fat eighth fabrics you received at Tuesday's meeting. You may also add in any Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids. No other fabrics allowed. If you missed that meeting we have a limited number you may pick up at the upcoming Open Sew days at Fabric Depot or March's meeting. First come, first serve.

Who can enter: Any PMQG 2014 member who receives a fabric pack

 Entry Details: Enter the challenge by bringing your mini quilt to the PMQG April meeting. If you cannot make the meting, please make arrangements for a friend to take it for you. Quilts that are not chosen to appear in the Quilt Knit Stitch! exhibit will be returned at May's meeting. 
  • All quilts must be labeled: A cloth label with the title of the quilt and your name, address, and telephone number must be sewn on the back of the quilt. The information on the label can be applied with embroidery or any other permanent means.  Do not use a water-soluble pen.
  • Quilts must have a hanging sleeve. Find information on how to add a hanging sleeve here.
  • Please take pictures of your quilt before you submit them to PMQG. If your quilt is chosen, you will then need to fill out an online form with info about you/your quilt and include a picture of the quilt.
Remember, these quilts are due at the April PMQG meeting. Please DO NOT bring them to the March meeting, we will not be accepting them yet.

 The fabrics: Members can receive 3 Fat Quarters of Robert Kaufman metallics fabrics. However, you may make a quilt that does not include these fabrics to enter into the exhibit. Fabrics will be passed out at an upcoming meeting after they are received by the officers.

Meet Jolene Knight, longarm quilter and owner of Good Knight Quilts! She's our featured business member for February, and is here to tell us about the wild world of professional quilting. 
What makes your business special or different than others in your industry?  
I pride myself on quality craftsmanship while still having a fast turnaround.

How long have you been doing this?
I’ve been a quilter since 2001, a free-motion quilter since 2006, and a longarm quilter since 2011. I started Good Knight Quilts in July of 2012.


What’s the most important thing you’ve had to learn to do your job well?
Communication with your customer to understand what they really want.

What do you see as a significant aesthetic trend right now? 
Even quilted texture and basic shapes.


Any new products or services you’d like to mention? 
I have added some cream and white 118” backing fabrics.

Why do you like being a business member of PMQG? 
Connecting with people, having friends that love quilting as much as I do. 


If you couldn’t work in the quilting world, what would your dream job be?
It would be exactly what I’m doing but in a little shop with basic fabrics and a community room for sew-ins.

January Charity Sew Recap



Ten  PMQG members participated in the Charity Sew Day at Modern Domestic on Thursday, January 30. We made enough of these fun wonky stars to complete a top! (Never fear: there are more, and this isn't the actual layout.) Cath will finish the assembly and quilting, and then we'll give it to Camp Erin, which serves children who are grieving.



Do any of these blocks look familiar? Michelle brought in this top, which she assembled from some of last year's Block of the Month donations. Dramatic!



Michelle also recently pieced this lively top from some more donated blocks.



Meanwhile Gail spent the day sewing these tumblers from pre-cut material that was donated to the guild. The photo doesn't do it justice!

Pretty impressive! But what's more impressive is how much fun everyone had. Charity sewing is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people, and practice sewing in a low-pressure environment. We hope to see you at the next Charity Sew Day!




Book Review: Vintage Quilt Revival

Hello PMQG! This is secretary Kelly Cole and I am here to review an amazing new quilt book from some lovely ladies from blogland: Vintage Quilt Revival. Co-authors Lee Heinrich from Freshly Pieced, Faith Jones from Fresh Lemon Quilts and Katie Blakesley from SwimBikeQuilt are not just fabulous quilters but also really accessible ladies who love to share their passion for quilting.

I have been following the trio for a while, and when the buzz of Vintage Quilt Revival started I was so excited when the pictures started rolling out. It really is a treasure trove of interesting blocks, solid quilting how-to's, and so many setting and color options. I love how each of the 20 blocks in the book has instructions on how to construct the block and then a quilt made with the block interpreted through one of the designers. And it's really them! The paper pieced blocks, colors and the settings are just spot on for each of their styles. The book feels like such an extension of their blogs.



So when I asked for a copy to review and give away to a lucky PMQG member I was super happy to get a big "yes," and I dove into making a block from the book. I choose the Exploding Star Block; a paper pieced block that I could not take my eyes off of! The super awesome part of this book is that it comes with an easy-to-navigate CD for printing all the paper-pieced templates. Love that!



The block was super easy to make, and the points were so pointy thanks to the paper pieced method. I used my favorite DS Quilt fabrics, that's how much I love this book! Once I made the block I sewed it up into a new pillow for the couch. A little machine quilting and hand quilting, finished off with a hidden side zipper.


But I couldn't stop there! I got ambitious and made the New World Pouch too! This sweet mid-sized pouch uses a mini version of the Mayflower block and it is tiny, thanks to the paper pieced method again. I used little scraps from the pillow and some yummy Essex linen.


I just love the construction details on the pouch. I finally learned this brilliant move for tabs at the end of zippers, so pro!

So all in all can you tell I love this book? I am dying to get my own copy, but one lucky PMQG member will take this lovely book home at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 18! If you can't wait till then it's available for purchase right now!

Medallion-a-long: Center Ideas

This year, instead of doing a block of the month, we'll be making a medallion quilt, with a new border every month! But you can't have borders until you have that center block. Here are some ideas and tips for getting started.

Important: You can use whatever type of block you want for the center, but it needs to finish at 16.5" for the rest of the pattern to work!

1. Dresden Plate

At the January meeting, Cath demonstrated how to use the Easy Dresden ruler to make this lovely circular block. It's easier than it looks!

Sew Mama Sew has instructions for making a Dresden with a template--no special ruler needed. And it's already the right size!

And here are instructions for using the Easy Dresden tool that Cath showed us.

2.  Paper-pieced Compass Block

Current PMQG members should have received an e-mail with instructions for a variety of gorgeous paper-pieced Compass blocks designed by Quilting on the Square. Lisa made the Spinning Points block and showed it at the guild meeting.

Note that these patterns are for 12.5" blocks. You can either enlarge the pattern or add borders to make a 16.5" block.

3. Enlarge any paper-pieced block

You can use your printer settings to enlarge a paper-pieced block pattern. Just choose "print," then "page setup." Under "scale," put the appropriate amount. (If the pattern makes an 8" finished block, use 200%. A 12" finished block would need to be enlarged 150%.) Just make sure the printed pattern is the right size before you start piecing!

4. Add borders to any 12.5" block

That's right. You can make your favorite 12.5" block, throw a 2.5" border around it, and call it done.

2014 Medallion-A-Long Overview

 This year, instead of doing a block of the month, PMQG is leading a medallion-a-long. A medallion quilt features one center block surrounded by a variety of different borders. Each month, we'll share a different border pattern. Follow along and at the end of the year, you'll have a completed quilt!

Medallion quilts are great for using up scraps, so dive into those scrap bins and get creative! 

This will be a great chance to learn some new techniques. We'll offer variants for many of the borders. Paper pieced? Wonky? With cornerstones or without? You decide!

  We will introduce new rounds through September and hope that gives people time to finish their quilts by December's meeting, where we will have a mini exhibition of them. The completed quilts should finish around 60 inches square.

Ready to get started? The first step is to make a 16-1/2" center block. A Dresden Plate (which Cath demonstrated at the January guild meeting, using the Easy Dresden ruler) is a good option. Stay tuned for more suggestions, plus tips for enlarging any block!

January Sew Day Recap

We had one of our busiest sew days ever on Saturday, January 4. When I showed up at about 1 p.m., almost every seat in the room was taken, and the fabric was flying.  So many great fabrics, so many beautiful quilts in progress! Here's a small sampling of what folks were working on:



 Elsa finished this paper-pieced potholder block-- part of a collection of kitchen-themed blocks by Quiet Play. The colors don't actually match her kitchen, she says--but they are super cute. 


Tanya spent the day making half-square triangles for a new, yet-to-be determined project. She used a technique where you make four at a time--pretty cool! 



Veronica made at least one tote bag, start to finish. 



Anne is focusing on embroidery and hand work this year. This flower piece is a mug rug. She's also resolved to quilt up 16 UFOs this year--wow! Good luck, Anne! 






Christin was sewing up a nice gray border for this colorful top. The pattern is from Karla Alexander's New Cuts for New Quilts, which Christin won at a guild meeting raffle.



Diana was making a giant chevron quilt. Her niece had requested gray and green, which, as Diana pointed out, is pretty much the color scheme of winter in Oregon. But the generous use of white makes it crisp and fresh. 



Mary Ann finished this baby quilt top, for her best friend's mom, who is about to become a grandma. (The mom and auntie have already received their quilts!) The block is called "Dutch pinwheel." 

 Sew Day is a great chance to connect with other quilters, see what other people are working on, and of course, work on your own projects.  Our next Sew Day is February 22 at Fabric Depot. It's free for members and $10 for non-members.  Hope you can join us!

2014 Membership, Meetings, and Sew Days

We're excited for the new year with PMQG! Here are some important details and dates about the coming year.

Membership for 2014 opened up at our December meeting. Membership for 2014 will be $40. This is the first time we have raised our membership rates, and this increase is due to joining the MQG officially, as well as now having to pay for a meeting space every month.


Ways to pay for membership:
  • Bring cash or check in the amount of $40 to any meeting
  • Pay via debit or credit at any meeting. A service fee of $1.50 will be added.
  • Pay online via Square. After filling out this membership application you will be given the Square link. A service fee of $1.50 will be added.

Business Member Spotlight: Bill Volckening Quilts



This month we're featuring Bill Volckening! Here is what Bill had to say about his company:

The name of my business is Bill Volckening Quilts, and it started up when I began receiving requests for appraisals from people in the quilt community. I took the appraisal skills classes in Paducah to learn what quilt appraisers do, and decided to be an independent appraiser. Although I didn’t promote the business and wasn’t expecting a lot of activity, I appraised more than 500 quilts in the first two years.

What’s the best thing about owning your particular business?

Serving the quilt community. That’s how the business started. And of course, meeting so many great people and seeing lots of wonderful quilts.

How long have you been in business?

Almost two years.

What’s been your favorite order/customer/memorable moment as a business owner?

My favorite moment was when I visited the new home of a client, who told me the appraisals served as proof of assets in the process of being approved for a loan on the house. It was very gratifying to assist a first-time homeowner.

What other jobs/businesses have you worked/owned?

I’ve done a lot of things, but never owned a business before. For ten years I was editor of a magazine for a sports organization with 50,000 member/subscribers, and midway through that time, I led the creation of a new magazine.

What made you want to go into this field of work?

When I first started sharing my collection in lectures, I didn’t realize it was anything out of the ordinary at first. The quilt community recognized it and grabbed hold of me. The knowledge I gained over years of collecting had value. That’s when people started asking for appraisals.

Do you still have time to do your own quilting and sewing while owning your business?

I’ve never done much sewing. Truth is I can’t see small things close up, and threading a needle is really difficult. If I look at this question as “do you still do the things you enjoy?” it’s an absolute yes! All the activities that led me to start a business are things I continue to do every day.

Does your store have classes, get-togethers, or special events you’d like to mention?

Although I haven’t done any special events with the business, I have curated four exhibitions in the last three years, two from my collection. The next show will take place at Latimer Quilt & Textile Center in March and April 2014. In 2015, I will exhibit 50 quilts in France following the release of my book with Quiltmania.

What would you like to see PMQG do to strengthen the quilting community in the Portland Metro Area?

I already love what PMQG is doing, and honestly don’t see much room for improvement. Just keep delving into all things quilt-related, keep interacting with other quiltmakers, and have fun!
