Carole Lyles Shaw Stash Jazz Workshop

PMQG is excited to host Carole Lyles Shaw for a trunk show and talk on sustainable stashing where she will dazzle us with her tips for eco-friendly quilting and tips for using our stashes

Carole will also be holding a workshop on Saturday, February 18th teaching new improv techniques based on bringing new life to orphaned blocks. You can see samples and read more here.

Carole is a modern quilt designer, author, and workshop teacher who has been an active member of the quilt and fiber art community for over twenty-five years. Carole always takes a modern, improvisational approach to her quilt designs. Her passion and focus is on designing quilts for the modern quilt movement and she centers her lectures on topics relevant to this audience. She has served on the Board of the Modern Quilt Guild and is a co-founder of the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild. 

Carole has received many accolades and has exhibited her quilts and art all around the United States and internationally. She has authored two books on modern quilting; Madly Modern Quilts and Patriotic Modern Quilts

Playing with color is one the most rewarding aspects of quilt making. It can be fun, intuitive, challenging and at times frustrating. In this 6 hour class, we will explore how colors play off one another, delve into the importance of value and learn tips for when you get stuck. Students will start with a variety of quick exercises, and move on to sewing small color studies that can be combined to make a larger quilt.

Raw Edge Applique Tour: “Confetti Fabric” and More with Tricia Royal

In this workshop, we will make “confetti” fabric using our tiniest scraps, as well as explore the possibilities of layering and appliquéing other raw edge shapes like squares, “squovals”, and strips. This class is all about color play and resourcefulness: you’ll be using up even the smallest scrap from your fabric stash! Use the techniques we explore in this class to create small or large quilts (via qullt-as-you-go or other methods), or bits of fabric you can use to make home decor items or accessories.

Description: The Watercolor Quilt is a wall hanging made from one large block that uses curved piecing to create the illusion of transparency from overlapping circles. The class will cover my process for building a fabric gradation and tips and tricks for stress-free curved piecing. Take the guesswork out of color selection by using one of the published color gradations inside the pattern! The Watercolor Quilt finishes at 32 x 32.

There is about an hour of prework that will be essential for students to complete in advance of the workshop. This prework is listed on the supply list.

Combining Designs Workshop with Christina Cameli

This is an intermediate free-motion quilting class where we combine multiple free-motion designs into complex arrangements. Learn four basic approaches to joining simple elements into unique, organic works. Christina will demonstrate techniques and guide you through trying them in your own style. Students should understand free-motion basics and some common designs like spirals and pebbling, but expertise in free-motion quilting is not required

Draw, Trace, Stitch! Workshop with Rebecca Ringquist

Students of any drawing level are invited to join Rebecca Ringquist for this full-day workshop exploring drawing techniques for machine embroidery. We will warm up by sketching on paper using blind contour techniques, drawing from both life and memory.    After an hour or so of fast drawings on paper, we will move on to translating these techniques into drawing with needles and thread.  A variety of transfer techniques will be demonstrated and employed.  Emphasis will be on experimentation and fast sample making.  If you have been looking for a way to loosen up and add imagery and meaning to your quilts, this is your class!

Jen Carlton Bailly presents her new workshop One Curve, Five Blocks, Hundreds of Ideas to PMQG.  In this class you'll take a simple curved block and mix it up, using all different methods of patchwork. You'll explore improv, slice & insert, curve in a curve, curved half square triangles, and patchwork. Once the blocks are sewn up, you’ll explore different ways to put the finished blocks together to create a design that’s uniquely yours!
