Improvisational Hand Quilting

  • Taborspace, Artspace 5441 Southeast Belmont Street Portland, OR, 97215 United States (map)

Hand quilting is super, super fun! And the best way to make something more fun is to improvise. So let’s practice the basics of hand quilting (beginners are welcome!) and then consider design and techniques for improv.

Supplies: basic sewing kit (scissors, cotton thread, seam ripper, rotary cutter, pins, etc), small ruler (up to 6.5”), long ruler (at least 12.5”) and:

  • safety pins or spray baste for basting [but DO NOT bring aerosols on airplanes!],

  • thimble,

  • handsewing needles (betweens or sharps in sizes comfortable for you to hold),

  • marking tool (hera or pencil or vanishing ink pen),

  • two fat quarters of white or off-white solid fabrics,

  • one fat quarter of cotton or 80/20 cotton/poly batting

  • hand-quilting thread in two non-neutral colors so that you can see your stitches

on your fabric (this can be any regular sewing-weight cotton thread or spooled threads labeled for hand quilting).

Before class: Please iron your fat quarters and pre-baste a quilt sandwich. We will quilt without hoops.

**Lunch is not provided, members will need to bring their own lunch.
