Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

From the Sisters Website:

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show™ (SOQS) is internationally recognized as the world's largest outdoor quilt show and quilt sale displaying more than 1300 quilts representing fiber artists from around the world.

More than 10,000 visitors from all 50 states and 27 foreign countries flock to Sisters on the second Saturday in July. Master quilt makers teach classes and workshops during Quilt Week and exhibit their quilts at our annual Quilt Show. In addition, hundreds of quilts are displayed in our "show-and-tell" exhibits - first time quilters, youth, quilts made by men - throughout the town of Sisters. Quilt exhibitors range in age from 10-92.

Many of the quilts on display can be purchased with a portion of the proceeds supporting SOQS, a 501(c)3 non profit organization which produces the annual Quilt Show.

It is the mission of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show™ to educate the public about the art, skill, and heritage of traditional and contemporary quilts and fiber arts, while enhancing the cultural vitality of the community of Sisters and Central Oregon.

Improvisational Hand Quilting

Improvisational Hand Quilting

Hand quilting is super, super fun! And the best way to make something more fun is to improvise. So let’s practice the basics of hand quilting (beginners are welcome!) and then consider design and techniques for improv.

Supplies: basic sewing kit (scissors, cotton thread, seam ripper, rotary cutter, pins, etc), small ruler (up to 6.5”), long ruler (at least 12.5”) and:

  • safety pins or spray baste for basting [but DO NOT bring aerosols on airplanes!],

  • thimble,

  • handsewing needles (betweens or sharps in sizes comfortable for you to hold),

  • marking tool (hera or pencil or vanishing ink pen),

  • two fat quarters of white or off-white solid fabrics,

  • one fat quarter of cotton or 80/20 cotton/poly batting

  • hand-quilting thread in two non-neutral colors so that you can see your stitches

on your fabric (this can be any regular sewing-weight cotton thread or spooled threads labeled for hand quilting).

Before class: Please iron your fat quarters and pre-baste a quilt sandwich. We will quilt without hoops.

**Lunch is not provided, members will need to bring their own lunch.

Adventures in Small Piecing with Chawne Kimber

Adventures in Small Piecing with Chawne Kimber

A surefire way to slow down your machine stitching is to stitch small things. We’ll construct a custom mini sampler quilt top whose blocks encourage practicing some efficient traditional and improvisational techniques specialized for smaller work. We’ll also discuss the visual impact of the use of varied scaling of blocks in our design work. In the end, we’ll agree that small piecing can enhance our quilts without terribly increasing our workload.

I'll bring my bin of scraps along and lots of samples. It will be a free-form class that starts with a trunk show and demonstrations of techniques. We'll follow up with open sewing time with one- on-one instruction.

Supplies: sewing machine, basic sewing kit (scissors, cotton thread, seam ripper, rotary cutter, etc), small ruler (up to 6.5”), long ruler (at least 12.5”), and fabric (either 6 coordinating and contrasting fat quarters OR the equivalent of 1 yard of scraps of varying sizes, colors and values; AND a half-yard of a coordinating solid for sashing and/or a border). Solids or small-scale prints will work best.

**Lunch is not provided, members will need to bring their own lunch.

Friday, June 22nd

Time: 10am-4pm

Memphis Time with Kim Kight

The Memphis Time Quilt is a fun, nostalgic, skill-building quilt inspired by 80s fashion watches and the Memphis Milano design resurgence. Have fun with fabric prints or solids to customize your own gigantic watch! Each 16.5”x90” watch block uses straight piecing, paper piecing, appliqué, and curved piecing, so there is never a dull moment. All of these techniques will be taught in the workshop. Students will make one watch, which can be used alone as a wall hanging or table runner, or as a start to the twin/full quilt (which needs five watches).

Let your print choices do the talking with the basic watch band and face, or opt for the paper-pieced alternative views for extra fun.
