Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show
The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is Saturday, July 8th.  Be sure to stop by the PMQG Special Exhibit, Community in Quilts.

If you signed up for a small quilt group at a meeting but never heard from us, we may not have been able to read your email address.  Please email the guild if you are interested in joining a small group and would like more information.

QuiltCon 2018
MQG member registration for QuiltCon 2018 in Pasadena began on June 26th.  

There are two QuiltCon challenges.  It appears that sign ups for the Michael Miller Our Yard Fabric Challenge are closed.  For The American Patchwork & Quilting Flying Geese Challenge, participants are asked to modernize a traditional flying geese block (any variation is acceptable), and make it into a modern quilt using modern quilting elements. More information about the challenges can be found on the QuiltCon website.

The theme of the QuiltCon 2018 Charity Quilt Challenge is Modern Traditionalism.  We are soliciting ideas for our PMQG Charity Quilt until June 30th.  Designs that fit the theme of Modern Traditionalism can be submitted in the form of a hand or computer-generated drawing. Designs should be composed of blocks that can be kitted and distributed to members for sewing.

Please email your design ideas to the guild (portlandmodernquiltguild at gmail.com) by June 30th and AnnMarie Cowley and her committee will pick a winner.  You can also email the guild if you would like to volunteer to make a block or two for this quilt.  We can't wait to see what our talented members come up with! Remember, the winner will receive a mini quilt made especially for them by AnnMarie Cowley!

Block of the Month
The June Block of the Month was presented.  The instructions for the June BOM and all previous months' blocks can be found on our website.  Be sure to check out the Tips section for information about sewing an accurate quarter-inch seam.

Charity Projects
PMQG donated 41 charity quilts in June!  This trimester we're making quilts for the Legacy Hospice Passage Quilts program and the Doernbecher Children's Hospital PICU.  Information about these organizations and size requirements for the quilts can be found here.  This summer we're partnering with Back-2-School Fresh to make pencil cases for local schoolchildren who need them.   Information about the organization and links to free pencil case patterns can be found here.

Latifah Saafir

Latifah Saafir gave an incredibly inspiring and moving presentation about Being True to Your Inner Artist.  She also brought many quilts to show us, including her brand new quilts made to showcase her latest fabric line, Double Dutch (coming soon to Fabric Depot!). The photo recap of Latifah's lecture can be found on the PMQG Flickr page.

Workshops and Showcase

The July 22nd workshop with Jen Carlton Bailly is now full, but you can sign up on the waitlist and we'll contact you if a space becomes available.

Rebecca Ringquist of Dropcloth Samplers will be teaching an embroidery workshop entitled Draw, Trace, Stitch! for PMQG on August 19th.  Details can be found here. Scholarship requests are open until July 10th.  PMQG members can apply for a scholarship here. 

The Showcase of PMQG Member Quilts will be held on Thursday, October 19th.  Due to space constraints, this is a members only event and, due to catering requirements, members will be required to RSVP.  We hope you are making quilts for the Showcase or have in mind a special quilt you want to submit.  Members may submit up to three quilts for consideration, but only one quilt per member will be shown.  More information (including size specifications) will be posted on our website soon.

Design Contest

The Modern Quilt Guild has announced the theme of the QuiltCon 2018 Charity Quilt Challenge, and it is Modern Traditionalism (some examples from the MQG website are shown above).   PMQG member AnnMarie Cowley has graciously agreed to be in charge of PMQG's entry again this year, and we have a fun design contest to announce.

PMQG Charity Projects

This spring and summer we're partnering with Back-2-School Fresh to make pencil cases for local schoolchildren who need them. Information about the organization and links to free pencil case patterns can be found here.

Earlier this month we delivered to Rose Haven 43 beautiful zipper bags made by our wonderful members and the many toiletries that you donated. For more information on Rose Haven and a list of their most wanted items, please go to their website.

Upcycling Found, Vintage and Collected Fabrics into your Quilting

We enjoyed an inspiring presentation and trunk show by Blair Stocker of Wisecraft Handmade. Blair makes modern quilts and home accessories using vintage, cherished and collected textiles. She teaches creative reuse, upcycling and quilt making both in person and online.

Workshops and Showcase

The June meeting, featuring a lecture and trunk show by Latifah Saafir, is on June 22nd - the fourth Thursday in June.  Due to space constraints, there will be a $5 guest fee for non-PMQG members.

The Showcase of PMQG Member Quilts will be held on Thursday, October 19th.  Due to space constraints, this is a members only event and, due to catering requirements, members will be required to RSVP.  We hope you are making quilts for the Showcase or have in mind a special quilt you want to submit.  Quilts of all sizes will be accepted.  More details will be coming to our website soon.

Jen Carlton Bailly will be teaching her new workshop One Curve, Five Blocks, 100s of Ideas for PMQG members on Saturday, July 22nd. You can read all about the workshop here.  You can request a scholarship until 4 pm on Saturday, May 27th, and sign ups for the workshop will go live at 10 am on Sunday, May 28th. 

Wrapping Up

Our April Meeting was all about Modern Seams

Julie Lund is helping to facilitate the small quilting groups that are now forming. If you are interested in being part of a small group, email PMQG for more information.  We are working to set up a Small Groups Forum where PMQG members can exchange information about existing and prospective small groups.  More information will be available soon. 

Would you like to provide some input on the jurying and judging criteria for QuiltCon? Through April 30, you can apply to be on the MQG Jurying and Judging Policies Task Force, which is expected to complete its work by June 30.  More information is available on the MQG website.

Support our PMQG Business Members and/or become one! Information about our business members can be found here.  Several of our Business Members offer discounts to PMQG members.  If you are an individual member with a business and you would like to upgrade your membership for only $10, you can do so here.  Email us at portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com if you would like more information about being a PMQG Business Member.

Due to the increasing popularity of All Day Sew at Fabric Depot, please be mindful of your sewing space and please don't save seats.  We know people like to sit with their friends, but please be courteous about offering empty spots to arriving members.  We are going to be working with Fabric Depot to see if we can arrange the space to accommodate more people comfortably.  All Day Sew is a great place to wear your name tag.  There may even be prizes for nametag wearers in the future....

We played a rousing game of Sit Down If ....  Dianne Denhem was the last woman standing and took home the last Retreat Swag Bag.

Quilts We're Making

PMQG Charity Programs

PMQG members have made 11 quilts for the children and teenagers attending this summer's Camp Erin!  Thank you to everyone who contributed to this amazing gift and thank you to our tireless Charity Quilts Coordinator, Cath Hall.  In the next trimester we will be making quilts for Legacy Hospice's Passage Quilts program. Quilts are given to patients in hospice care. We are continuing to make quilts for the PICU at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.  Our next Charity Sew Day at Modern Domestic is Thursday, April 27th.  Don't forget, PMQG members get 20% off on Charity Sew Days!

For our Charity Zipper Bags program, from May through August we'll be making pencil cases for local schoolchildren, which will be distributed by Back-2-School Fresh, a local charity that provides supplies and services to schoolchildren who need them.  Information about the pencil cases and a list of needed supplies, as well as links to tutorials and free pencil case patterns will be added to the website soon.

Art Gallery Fabrics is sponsoring a Mini Quilt Challenge for PMQG members.  24 quilters will receive a bundle of 10 fat quarters of Sharon Holland's beautiful new fabric line,  Bountiful.  The challenge will be to create a Modern Mini Quilt inspired by rustic elements that complement the homey and earthy feel of Bountiful. The quilts can be no larger than 20" on any side.  Three winners will be chosen by Art Gallery Fabrics and Sharon Holland, and Art Gallery is providing fabulous prizes for the winners.  The Mini Quilts will be shown at the PMQG Member Quilt Showcase in October.  More details will be provided soon.  Please, sign up only if you are committed to making a Mini Quilt.  If more than 24 people sign up, 24 participants will be chosen by lottery.

Sign ups for the June workshops with Latifah Saafir went live on April 23rd.  The Glam Clam workshop is sold out, but you can sign up on the wait list here.  There are still some spots available in the Pickled Beets and Design Your Own Bias Tape Applique workshops.  More information and a link to purchase a spot in the workshops can be found here.  At this time, workshops are open exclusively to 2017 PMQG members.  If you would like to become a member, you can do that here.

Latifah Saafir will be the guest speaker at our June meeting, where she will do a trunk show and talk to us about Being True to Your Inner Artist. This meeting is free to members, but there will be a $5 charge for non-members.

Blair Stocker, author of the new book, Wise Craft Quilts, will be coming in May to speak to us about making quilts from vintage, upcycled and collected fabrics.

 

 

 

 

Seams Modern

Quartered A 1/X by Stephanie Ruyle

We were so happy to have Stephanie Ruyle as our April guest speaker.  Stephanie is a member of the Denver Metro Modern Quilt Guild, an instructor at the University of Colorado's Idea Forge, and has won many awards and accolades for her very modern quilts made with clever seaming techniques that she has developed by drawing on her garment sewing expertise.  She is a great believer in cross-pollinating your garment making and quilting skills.  Stephanie showed us many of her beautiful quilts, which provided a visual history of her evolution as a quiltmaker using complex seaming techniques adapted from garment making.  On April 22nd, 15 lucky PMQG members took Stephanie's workshop, Making Modern with Minimal Decisions, which focused on designing modern quilts with minimal complex seam construction.  Students were limited to 8 seams in their project. Wrapping Up

We had three fabulous raffle prizes and two surprise prizes. Carol Parks won the Working with Color Bundle, full of colorful goodies donated by Hunter's Design Studio, Cath Hall, C&T Publishing, and Quilters Dream Batting.  PMQG Business Member Kazumi Peterson won the Tula Pink and Material Obsession Bundle, featuring a jelly roll of Tula's new line Tabby Road,  donated by Fiddlesticks Quilt Shop, and books, tools and batting generously donated by June Tailor, C&T Publishing and The Warm Company.  Christine Yi won the Electric Quilt + Art Gallery Bundle, with the new EQ Mini software, a fat quarter pack of Sharon Holland's Bountiful fabric, and a coloring book and batting donated by C&T Publishing and June Tailor.

Stephanie Ruyle brought us color cards and beautiful Painter's Palette Solid fabrics from Fabri-Quilt to give away to two lucky members, who turned out to be Lara Giles and Donna McClelland.

March Meeting Recap

But first, some announcements:

Sign-ups for the PMQG UFO Club have been extended to March 24th.  You can sign up, submit your projects list, and pay online.  Don't forget to use the hashtag #pmqgufo when posting photos of your quilts in progress and, especially, your finished quilts.

Our first workshop is Saturday, April 22rd from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with Stephanie Ruyle.  It is currently full, but there is a wait list.  There are two full scholarship spots available for this workshop.  PMQG members can request a scholarship by submitting the scholarship form on the workshop page of our website by March 23rd.

 

There are six additional workshops scheduled this year:

Workshop descriptions will be available soon on our website.  A printable calendar of 2017 Lectures, Workshops, and Events can be found on our Calendar of Events page.

For future workshops, scholarships will be assigned prior to open registration so that applicants will have the option of registering if they do not receive a scholarship.  Recipients are limited to one scholarship per year. All scholarship recipient information is confidential.

Based on survey results, we have cancelled the August picnic and will be having a regular meeting in August.

Our October meeting will be a showcase of PMQG member quilts and will be held at the Lagunitas Community Room (237 NE Broadway).  Beer and appetizers will be served. We will have more details to share with you soon.

Our Small Groups Volunteer Coordinator, Julie Lund, is helping to facilitate the small quilting groups that are now forming.  If you are interested in participating in a small group, email us at portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com.  Julie will have sign-up sheets for all of the small groups at our April meeting.

Cath Hall talked to us about our charity quilts and the joy they bring to their recipients.  We have already provided Camp Erin with 7 quilts for this year's campers, and we have given 22 to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital's PICU.  The next Charity Sew Day is March 23rd at Modern Domestic.  

 

Member Allyson Enriquez spoke to us about her nonprofit, Butterfly Boxes PDX, which partners with Catholic Charities to give every refugee arriving in Portland a welcome bag.  They are seeking quilts for their upcoming fundraiser.  If you would like to help, please contact Allyson.

Thank you to everyone who has been busy making zipper bags for Rose Haven - so many wonderful bags have been donated. We will be delivering all of the bags and supplies to Rose Haven soon. Keep on making the bags - we will announce our next organization at the April meeting.

Meredith Hobbs presented information about lettering styles you may want to use in your Word Quilt Challenge quilt.  Word Quilts will be the theme of our special exhibit at the 2018 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, so if you are considering submitting your quilt for the exhibit, please keep in mind that it must be no smaller than 40" and no larger than 102" on any side.

February Meeting Recap

The February meeting was all about Words.

But first, some Announcements:

 

The Camp Tilikum Spring Retreat is now full, but there is a wait list.

 

The PMQG UFO Club is open for business, with Marcia Mersky at the helm. Here's how it works: you submit a list of up to 10 quilts, and you pay $10 to join the club.  You can enroll online, at March Sew Day, or at the March meeting (deadline for sign ups is March 16th).   Use the hashtag #pmqgufo when posting photos of your quilts in progress and, especially, your finished quilts.  You are also encouraged to show them at Show and Tell.  Each time you finish a quilt, a ticket with your name on it will go into the UFO Club Jar.  At the December meeting, one of the tickets will be chosen, and the winner will win a cash prize of half of all of the Club dues.  The other half will go to the PMQG Scholarship Fund.   Speaking of which ...

 

We introduced the PMQG Scholarship Fund, which will provide workshop scholarships.  Our goal is to make it possible for all members who want to attend a workshop to be able to.  The Guild has seeded the Fund with $500; Sam Hunter generously donated her speaking fee to it, and half of the UFO Club dues will go to it.  Nancy Stovall of Just Quilting has also made a very generous donation to the Scholarship Fund.  Members can donate to the Fund directly: by cash or check at the monthly meetings or any PMQG event, or online.  All donations are tax deductible.

 

The complete results of the 2017 PMQG Survey are now available.  Thank you again to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey.  We are using the survey results in planning this year.

 

Our Small Groups initiative for members who would like to sew together in smaller groups will be launched at the March meeting.  Small groups will be organized by focus, location and day/time of day.  If you think you might be interested in participating in a small group, please take our survey.

We are going to have a beautiful exhibit of PMQG Community Quilts at this year's Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.  Participants, please remember that your quilts must be completely finished by April 20th.

Word Quilts -- PMQG Speaks

The 2017 Quilt Challenge and the theme of our special exhibit at the 2018 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show was introduced by Meredith Hobbs.  The theme is Words.  Meredith gave an inspiring lecture about the history of word quilts. This will be a year long challenge, and Meredith will continue to provide information and encouragement throughout the year.  

 

Meredith and Sam Hunter will be hosting a paper piecing demo at All Day Sew at Fabric Depot on Saturday March 4th at 11 and 2.  All are welcome. 

 

Kristy Lea of Quiet Play is giving PMQG members a 15% discount on all of her patterns through Friday, March 3rd.  Kristy offers a range of font styles for piecing letters.  You can find links to her fonts on the Word Quilt Resource Page, and you can find her patterns here.  The Discount Code is being sent to members via email.  Please do not share the code outside the Guild.

January Meeting Recap

Wow!  It was so exciting to see such a large and enthusiastic group of quilters ready to have some fun with us in 2017!  Here's what happened at our January meeting:

We thanked our 2016 officers for a great year and introduced our 2017 officers and volunteer coordinators.

We crowned Jennifer Gleich the 2016 Queen of the UFOs.  We asked for a volunteer to spearhead the UFO project in 2017, and we got one.  Look for an email with all the details, coming soon.

We thanked the 157 members who completed our member survey and announced the winner of the survey raffle, Patty Turner.  We'll share details of the survey results at our February meeting and on the website.

  • Stars Galore, the 2017 Block of the Month Project, was introduced by PMQG Secretary Anne Matlak, who also designed it.  All of the details about this year-long project, and the instructions for making the first block, can be found here.

  • The PMQG Retreat at Camp Tilikum is March 30th - April 2nd.  The cost is $245 for 3 nights, and includes all meals.  Registration opens February 3rd and is limited to 34 people.  Members will receive additional information about registration via email.

  • This quarter we'll be making quilts for Camp Erin, a summer camp for grieving children.  Find all the details here.  

  • We encourage you to make quilts throughout the year for the Doernbecher PICU.  Find all the details here.

  • We are launching a new charity project this year: Toiletry bags for nonprofit organizations, including domestic violence centers and homeless and transition shelters.  We have provided links to some free tutorials for zipper bags here. Information about requested toiletry items can also be found here.  Our designated charity for the first quarter is Rose Haven.  

  • Our next Charity Sew Day is on January 31st; a list of scheduled Charity Sew Days is here.

We had a fun Holiday Meeting after our snow delay! 

Although we had a smaller group we had a fun evening with our holiday swap, member sale, giveaways, and show and tell. 

For our January meeting we'll be raffling off our Row by Row quilt and wrapping up UFO's for 2016 so be sure to bring your list of completed projects!   

We hope you are working on your entries for our Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show special exhibit. We have expanded the entries to include any group quilt keeping with our theme of community.

For the striped sections, cut:

  • 1 3.5" x WOF strip Shale

  • 1 1.5" x WOF strip Snow

  • 1 2" x WOF strip Wasabi

  • 1 1.5" x WOF strip Dusty Peach

  • 1 2" x WOF strip Curry

  • 1 2.5" x WOF strip Blueberry

Sew the WOF strips together in the order listed above, then subcut into sections:

  • 1 10.5" section

  • 1 5.5" section

  • 1 25.5" section

Now create two Fremont blocks using the foundation paper piecing template.  See the picture for color placement.  Piece all of the "A" section on the first template, then all of the "B" section on the 2nd template, then join the templates before adding sections "C" and "D".

To create the row, join as follows: 10.5" strip section, Fremont block, 5.5" strip section, Fremont block, 25.5" strip section.

Now join with the other rows, add borders as desired, and your PMQG 2016 Row-by-Row quilt top is complete!

December Meeting is Postponed due to Inclement Weather

The Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting for tonight, December 8th is postponed due to inclement weather. Replacement date TBA. 

While the severity of Portland weather can be tricky to predict we are taking the advice of PPS, TriMet, State of Oregon and Multnomah County to avoid travel this evening. 

We are all disappointed to postpone the holiday fun tonight, but the safety of all our membership is our first concern.

Membership Updates
  Following the lively discussion about the Portland Modern Quilt Guild's membership in The Modern Quilt Guild, rather than calling for a vote at the December meeting, the 2016 Board and the 2017 Board thought it would be better to spend 2017 exploring and evaluating the benefits available to us through The Modern Quilt Guild.  Mims Copeland has volunteered to act as our MQG liaison in 2017, and many of you seemed to think that it would be a good idea to formally review our experiences with the MQG towards the end of 2017 and take a vote then if it seems warranted.

  PMQG 2017 memberships are $40, and we will be accepting payments by check and cash at the December meeting. We encourage members who prefer to use credit cards to pay on our website, www.portlandmodernquiltguild.com (just press the JOIN US button).  Membership cards will be ready for you at the January meeting.
